So, I got this idea kicking around in my head to make a baseball bat look like a USA icon. Don’t ask me why, just felt like a cool project to try out. Had an old wooden bat collecting dust in the corner, figured it was time it got some attention.

First thing I did was grab the bat. It was pretty beat up, couple of dings here and there. So, sanding was definitely step one. Man, I dislike sanding. Gets everywhere. But, you know, gotta get that surface smooth otherwise the paint won’t stick right, looks messy. Spent a good while on that, making sure it was decent enough.
Then came the planning part. How was I gonna get the stars and stripes on this thing? Decided to go for the classic look. Needed some painter’s tape, that blue stuff. And paint, obviously. Red, white, and blue.
Getting the Colors On
Okay, taping off the sections. This took way longer than I thought. Trying to get lines straight on a round surface? Not easy, let me tell you. Lots of adjusting and re-taping.
Here’s roughly what I did:
- Taped off where the blue field for the stars would go.
- Painted that section blue. Let it dry completely. This waiting part is always tough, I just wanna keep going.
- Then, the tricky part: taping the stripes over the rest of the bat. Measured them out, sort of. Eyeballed it mostly.
- Painted the red stripes first. Another wait for drying.
- Peeled off the tape for the red stripes, then carefully taped over the red and blue parts to paint the white stripes.
Pulling off the tape is always the moment of truth, right? Had a few spots where the paint bled under the tape. Annoying. Had to go back with a tiny brush and touch those up. Took some patience. It wasn’t perfect, but hey, it’s handmade.

Stars and Finishing Up
For the stars, I thought about stencils. Found a star stencil that looked about the right size. Taped it down carefully over the blue section and used white paint. Did this one by one. It was slow work. Dabbed the paint on lightly to avoid more bleeding under the stencil.
After all the paint was dry – and I mean really dry, waited like a full day just to be sure – I gave the whole thing a light sanding again, just to smooth out any rough edges from the paint layers. Then wiped it down clean.
Finally, sprayed on a couple of coats of clear sealant. Wanted to give it some protection, make it look a bit glossy. That really made the colors pop.
And that was pretty much it. Stood back and looked at it. Yeah, looks like a USA baseball bat. Got that iconic feel. Wasn’t a quick job, definitely took some fiddling around. But kinda satisfying to take that old dusty bat and turn it into something cool looking. It’s not gonna win any awards for perfection, but it’s got character. Made it myself, you know?
