Okay, let’s talk about something I got into tracking over the last few years – the big golf tournaments, the majors. Wasn’t always a golf guy, honestly. Used to think it was a bit slow, just folks walking around nice parks.

But then, I don’t know, maybe five or six years back, I was flipping channels one Sunday afternoon in the spring and landed on The Masters. I just kinda left it on. Watched for a while. Saw that Augusta course, looked almost fake it was so green. Saw the whole green jacket ceremony. Something about it just grabbed me, you know? The pressure, the tradition, I guess.
So after that, I started paying a bit more attention. I figured, if that one was so interesting, what were the other really big ones? Did some digging, asked a buddy who plays. Found out there are four main events every year that everyone gets hyped about. They call ’em the majors.
Keeping Track of the Big Four
So I made it a sort of personal project, just to know when they were and try to watch a bit. It became a routine. Here’s the ones I follow now:
- The Masters Tournament: That’s the first one, usually in April. The one that got me started. Still love seeing Augusta National.
- PGA Championship: This one moves around date-wise sometimes, but it’s usually in May now. Always a tough field.
- U.S. Open: Comes around in June. My main memory of this one is always how incredibly hard they set up the courses. Brutal stuff.
- The Open Championship: This is the one over in the UK, usually in July. Sometimes folks call it the British Open. Totally different feel, the courses look wild, and the weather can be anything. Proper old-school golf.
So yeah, that’s my cycle now. Spring and summer, I find myself checking the golf news, seeing who’s playing well, catching the weekend rounds if I can. Didn’t really plan on getting into it, it just sort of happened after watching that one Masters.
It’s not like I suddenly became a golf expert or started playing every day. Nah. I still just hack it around sometimes. But following these four tournaments, learning a bit about the history, the different courses, the players who’ve won ’em… it’s added something interesting to follow through the year. Just wanted to share how I sort of stumbled into tracking the 4 golf majors. It’s a simple thing, but I enjoy it.
