Okay, so today I wanted to figure out what exactly a “take foul” is in basketball. I’d heard the term a few times, and I had a vague idea, but I wanted to be sure.

My Deep Dive into Take Fouls
First, I hit up the internet. Just started searching, you know, “what is a take foul basketball”.
I skimmed a couple of articles and watched some videos. I saw examples of players basically grabbing or wrapping up the ball-handler to stop a fast break. It became pretty clear what this was all about.
So from what I am seeing, I start understand what a take foul is, and here’s my understanding of what it is:
- Stopping the Fast Break: The main point of a take foul is to prevent the other team from getting an easy basket on a fast break.
- Intentional, Not Hard: It is an intentional foul, but doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
- New Rule Change: I saw that the penalty for take fouls got stricter to get more fast breaks.
The penalty is now one free throw, and also the team that was going on offense gets the ball back.
I get it now! No more easy way out. So, That’s a take foul.
