Well, guys, I tried out that wes hand wrestling thing I saw on TV the other day. It looked kinda cool, all those guys grappling and sweating, so I thought, why not give it a shot?
First off, I didn’t really know where to start. I mean, it’s not like there’s a wes hand wrestling gym on every corner. So, I did what any confused person would do – I looked it up online. Turns out, there are these things called USA Wrestling Events and local wrestling events. You just type in your zip code and how far you’re willing to drive. Pretty neat, huh?
But here’s the kicker, I didn’t find anything close by. I mean, I live way out in the boonies, so it wasn’t that surprising. I did learn about some wrestling app, but I don’t know about that. Anyway, I decided I’d try to learn a bit on my own.
I found out that there’s this guy, Wes Hand, who used to be a big shot wrestler. He’s now a coach at this place called Pleasant Valley. And get this, there’s another coach there, Jens Pulver, who’s a UFC Hall of Famer! I guess Pleasant Valley is the place to be if you want to learn from the best. They even have youth and middle school programs, which is cool for the kids.
So, I watched some videos of Wes Hand and other wrestlers, trying to figure out the basics. It’s a lot harder than it looks, let me tell you. These guys are strong and they know how to use their bodies. I tried to copy some of their moves, but I mostly just ended up in a tangled mess on the floor.
Here’s what I tried:
- Stance: I tried to get into that low, crouched stance that wrestlers use. My legs were burning after like, two minutes.
- Hand fighting: This is where you try to control your opponent’s hands and arms. I tried this with my buddy, and we just ended up slapping each other’s hands like a couple of kids.
- Takedowns: This is the hard part. I tried to do a single-leg takedown, where you grab one of your opponent’s legs and try to trip them. Let’s just say I ended up on my butt more times than I care to admit.
After a few hours of this, I was exhausted. I was sweating like a pig, my muscles were aching, and I had a few new bruises to show for my efforts. But you know what? It was kinda fun. I mean, I’m not gonna be joining the UFC anytime soon, but it was a good workout and I learned a little bit about this whole wrestling thing.
My takeaway?
Wrestling is tough, man. Those guys on TV make it look easy, but it takes a lot of strength, skill, and dedication. I have a newfound respect for wrestlers, that’s for sure. Maybe one day I’ll find a real gym and learn how to do it properly. But for now, I think I’ll stick to watching it on TV.
