Alright, so the fantasy basketball season is creeping up again, you know how it is. The draft date gets set, and suddenly, besides worrying about who to pick first, there’s that other big question: what am I gonna call my team this year?
I always like to have a bit of fun with it. A serious name? Nah, not for me. League’s gotta have some laughs, right? So, my process usually starts pretty simply. I just sat down, thought about the league, the guys in it, and what kind of vibe I wanted.
Getting the Ideas Flowing
First thing I did was grab a piece of paper. Old school, I know. I started jotting down names of players I thought might be on my team, or just popular guys around the league. You know, the big names, the rookies everyone’s talking about, guys with interesting names.
Then, I just started playing with words. Puns are usually the easiest way to get something funny. I looked at the player names I wrote down:
- Could I twist their name into a common phrase?
- Does it rhyme with something funny?
- Any pop culture references I could tie in?
I spent a good chunk of time just doing this. Some ideas were terrible, real groaners. Like, “LeBron Appetit” – maybe funny once, but kinda played out. I crossed those out fast. Others made me chuckle, so I put a star next to them.
Looking Around (Carefully)
After hitting a bit of a wall with just player names, I broadened things out. Started thinking about basketball terms themselves. “Rebound,” “assist,” “dunk,” “traveling.” Could I make puns out of those? Stuff like “Fast Break-fast” or “Carry On My Wayward Dun”. Again, wrote ’em all down, good and bad.

I’ll admit, I did kinda glance around online. Not searching for lists directly, you know, but just seeing what kind of funny stuff pops up in basketball discussions. Sometimes you see a meme or a joke about a player, and that sparks an idea. You gotta be careful not to just steal something someone else is already using in your league, though. That’s poor form.
Narrowing it Down
Okay, so now I had this sheet of paper, maybe 20-30 potential names, some good, some awful. This is where it gets tough. I started reading them aloud. Sounds silly, but it helps. Does it roll off the tongue? Is it actually funny, or just kinda dumb?
I axed anything that was too complicated or required too much explanation. The best ones are usually pretty quick, easy to get. I also thought about my league mates – would they get the joke? An inside joke only I understand isn’t much fun for the league chat.
I ended up with a short list, maybe five or six names I really liked. Stuff like “Doncic & Chong”, “Jokic On You”, maybe “Grimes Against Humanity”. Simple, pun-based, topical enough.
The Final Pick
Choosing the final one is always a gut feeling thing. Which one makes me smile the most? Which one will get a reaction in the league group chat? This year, I leaned towards something related to a player I was actually hoping to draft. Seemed fitting.

So I settled on one. Won’t say which yet, gotta keep some mystery for the league! But the whole process, just sitting down, messing with words, trying to be clever (even if I’m not that clever), it’s part of the fun of fantasy sports. It gets you thinking about the players and the game before the draft even starts. And honestly, seeing your funny team name up on the scoreboard each week? It just adds a little extra enjoyment, win or lose. That’s how I got mine sorted this year, anyway. Just took a bit of time and willingness to look silly on paper for a while.
