Alright, let’s talk about this UConn women’s basketball coach salary thing. You know, how much money them coaches make. I heard folks jabbering about it, so I figured I’d try to make some sense of it for ya.
Now, they got this fella, Geno Auriemma. He’s been coachin’ them girls for a good long while. Seems like he’s pretty good at it too, winnin’ all them games. But the thing is, these coaches, they make a whole heap of money. More money than most folks ’round here ever see in their whole lives, that’s for sure.
I heard tell that Geno, well, he’s gonna be makin’ somethin’ like $3.34 million in 2024-25. Can you believe that? Three million dollars! That’s just for one year! He gets a base salary of $400,000, but then he gets all this extra money for talkin’ and stuff. They call it “speaking, consulting, and media obligations,” but it sounds like fancy talk for just yappin’ to folks to me.
And this money, it just keeps goin’ up! They say his extra money goes up by $200,000 every year. So, he’ll be makin’ even more next year, and the year after that. It’s enough to make your head spin.
- Geno’s base salary: $400,000 a year.
- Extra money for talkin’ and such: Starts at $2.94 million in 2024-25, goes up $200,000 each year.
- Total for 2024-25: Around $3.34 million.
They gave him a new contract, see. It’s supposed to keep him coachin’ until 2029. Five more years of makin’ all that money. Good for him, I guess, but it does make you wonder if all that money couldn’t be used for somethin’ else. Maybe helpin’ out folks who need it more.
Now, I heard some other numbers too. They were talkin’ about other coaches, at other places. Like at Brown University. The men’s coaches there, they make an average of $182,068. That’s a lot less than Geno, but still more than most folks I know make. And the women’s coaches at Brown? They get around $129,078 on average.
Then there’s this other woman coach, Cori Close. They say she don’t make as much as Geno or some of them other big-time coaches, but she still got $774,722 in 2024. That ain’t chicken feed, let me tell ya.
So, what’s the deal with all this money? Well, I reckon it’s because people like watchin’ them basketball games. And when lots of people watch, the schools and the TV folks, they make a whole bunch of money. And I guess they gotta pay the coaches enough to keep ’em around, so they can keep winnin’ games and makin’ more money.
But still, it makes you scratch your head sometimes. Seems like a whole lot of money just for coachin’ a basketball team. I mean, they ain’t out there plantin’ crops or buildin’ houses or nothin’. They’re just tellin’ them girls how to throw a ball through a hoop.
I also heard that Geno had a contract before, and that one was supposed to last until 2025. And his base salary back then was $600,000. Seems like they lowered his base salary but gave him more of that extra money in this new contract. Maybe they’re tryin’ to be tricky, who knows?
Anyway, that’s what I’ve been hearin’ about this UConn women’s basketball coach salary situation. It’s a lot of money, that’s for sure. More money than most of us will ever see. But I guess that’s just how it is in the world of big-time sports.
And remember, they extended Geno’s contract through 2029. That’s a long time, and a lot of money. They said it was a $15 million deal, so that’s $3 million a year on average. Makes you wonder if they got enough money left over to buy new basketballs for the girls.
So there you have it. More money than you can shake a stick at, goin’ to these basketball coaches. Makes you wonder if they ever stop and think about how lucky they are.
