Well, let me tell you about this little adventure I had getting into the car dealership business. You know, it all started with Troy Aikman, that legendary quarterback from the Dallas Cowboys. Yeah, the guy who used to sling that pigskin like nobody’s business. Turns out, he’s got a knack for business, too.
So, I heard that Troy Aikman was getting into the car dealership game down in Arlington, Texas. Now, I’ve always been a bit of a car guy myself, and the idea of owning a dealership had crossed my mind a time or two. And when I heard Aikman was involved, well, that just piqued my interest even more.
I started doing some digging, you know, just poking around to see what this whole thing was about. Turns out, Aikman teamed up with some local bigwigs, David Moritz and John David Moritz, who already owned Moritz Cadillac-BMW, and another fella named Buz Post, who had Buz Post Pontiac-GMC-Isuzu. Seemed like a pretty solid crew to me.
From what I gathered, most dealerships are these family-owned or independent joints, they’re like franchises of the big car makers, you know, like Ford or GM. And they don’t just sell cars, they do all the maintenance, repairs, and even help you out with financing. It’s a whole operation.
Now, Troy Aikman, he’s not just some pretty face who can throw a football. I mean, the guy was the first overall pick in the ’89 draft, went to six Pro Bowls, and won three Super Bowls! He even got that MVP award in Super Bowl XXVII. And they put him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in ’06 and the College Football Hall of Fame in ’08. The guy’s a legend, no doubt about it.
But here’s the kicker, Aikman’s been killing it in the business world, too. Besides these car dealerships, I heard he co-owned a NASCAR team with Roger Staubach, another Cowboys legend, called HOF Racing. And get this, he’s even a part-owner of the San Diego Padres! This guy’s got his hands in everything.
So, I thought to myself, “If Troy Aikman can do it, why can’t I?” I mean, the guy’s a winner, and I like to think of myself as a winner, too. So I started making some calls, you know, feeling things out.
- First, I did some serious research. I looked into the legal requirements, the financials, and the local market in Arlington.
- Next, I reached out to some folks in the industry, just to get a feel for the business from the inside. I talked to some dealership owners, some sales managers, just to get their take on things.
- Then, I started looking at potential locations. I drove around Arlington, checking out different properties, trying to find the perfect spot for a dealership.
- After that, I put together a business plan, you know, with all the numbers and projections, just to see if this whole thing was even feasible.
- Finally, I decided to take the plunge. I secured the financing, found a great location, and started putting together a team.
It was a lot of work, let me tell you, but seeing it all come together was pretty amazing. And you know what? It’s been a wild ride, but I’m glad I did it.
Now, I’m not saying I’m the next Troy Aikman or anything, but I’m holding my own in this crazy car business. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll be selling cars to the next generation of football legends.
I will continue to share my industry insights and experiences here, hoping to help more people understand the car dealership business. And I hope that through my sharing, I can inspire more people to pursue their dreams bravely, just like Troy Aikman did.
