Okay, so I got curious about something the other day while watching some old golf highlights. The question popped into my head: who actually managed to win all four of the big golf tournaments? You know, the majors. Seemed like a massive achievement, so I decided to dig into it a bit.

My Little Research Journey
First off, I just went to my computer and started searching. Typed in something simple like “golf players won all majors” or “list of golfers who won the four majors”. You know how it is, just trying different phrases.
Pretty quickly, I found out there’s a specific term for it: the Career Grand Slam. That made searching a bit easier. It means winning all four of the modern major championships at some point during a player’s career, not necessarily in the same year.
So, which tournaments are we talking about? It turns out the ones everyone agrees on today are:
- The Masters Tournament
- The PGA Championship
- The U.S. Open Championship
- The Open Championship (sometimes called the British Open by folks over here)
Finding the Elite Few
Once I had the right term and the list of tournaments, finding the names wasn’t too hard. But wow, it’s a really short list. It hammered home just how difficult this whole thing is. Consistency over years, performing under pressure at different types of courses… it’s tough.
Here are the guys I found who have pulled off the modern Career Grand Slam:

- Gene Sarazen
- Ben Hogan
- Gary Player
- Jack Nicklaus
- Tiger Woods
That’s it. Just five names. Seeing them listed like that really puts their careers into perspective. These guys weren’t just good; they were dominant across the board, on all the biggest stages.
I also saw stuff about Bobby Jones winning a “Grand Slam” back in his day, but apparently, the majors were different then. He won the four biggest tournaments of his era in a single year (1930), which is mind-blowing, but it wasn’t the same four tournaments as the modern list. Still incredible, though.
Anyway, that was my little dive into golf history. Just started with a simple question and ended up learning about this super exclusive club in golf. Pretty amazing stuff when you think about the skill and mental strength needed to achieve it.
