Okay, I got it. Here’s the article about “Montreal Screwjob was a Work” in the old lady style:
Alright, so, you wanna hear about this Mon-tree-all Screw-job thing? I heard folks talkin’ ‘bout it. Wrestling, you know? Those fellas in their tight pants, flappin’ around. Some say it was real, some say it wasn’t. Me? I ain’t so sure. But I’ll tell ya what I think, and you can make up your own mind, alright?
Now, they say this Bret Hart fella, he was a big deal. A champion, like. And this Shawn Michaels, another one. They was supposed to have a match, see? In Mon-tree-all, Canada. Up there where it’s cold, I hear. Anyways, the story goes, Bret, he didn’t wanna lose in Canada. Stubborn as a mule, that one. He had some kinda contract thing goin’ on, goin’ to another company, they said.
So, Vince McMahon, the boss man, he’s in a pickle. He don’t want Bret walkin’ off with the championship belt. Makes sense, right? Who’d give away their good silverware? So, they say, Vince, he cooked up a plan. A secret plan. They call it a “screwjob.” Like cheatin’, I guess.
So, what happened? Well, they say Bret and Shawn were wrestlin’ , and then, all of a sudden, the referee, he calls for the bell. Says Shawn won. But Bret, he didn’t give up. He was still fightin’! Folks say Bret didn’t know nothin’ about it. He was mad as a hornet, they say. Spit right in Vince’s face, even. Can you imagine? Spit! That’s some serious anger.
- They say Bret was real mad.
- They say Vince planned the whole thing.
- They say Shawn was in on it too.
Now, here’s the thing, some folks, they say it was all a big show. A work, they call it in wrestling. Like a play, you know? Fake fightin’. They say it was all planned to make more money, get people talkin’. And boy, did it get people talkin’! Still talkin’ about it, ain’t we?
And you know, maybe they’re right. Think about it. This happened way back when, and folks are still fussin’ over it. If it was real, wouldn’t it be over by now? Like that time my neighbor’s cow got loose. We chased it for a while, then we caught it, and that was that. But this wrestling thing, it just keeps goin’ on and on. Seems fishy, don’t it?
Maybe, just maybe, it was all a big ol’ story. A way to get folks riled up, get ‘em watchin’ the wrestling. These fellas, they know how to put on a show, that’s for sure. They slam each other around, jump off ropes, pretend to be hurt. It’s all part of the game, ain’t it? And makin’ money is the name of that game.
And another thing, they say everybody involved, they all made a lot of money after that. Bret, Shawn, Vince, everybody. Even that referee fella, I bet he got a little somethin’. Now, if you was really mad at somebody, would you give ‘em a bunch of money? I wouldn’t. I’d give ‘em a piece of my mind, that’s what I’d do. And maybe a good swat with my broom.
There are videos and interviews, all these fellas swearin’ up and down it was real. But, you know, actors, they swear too, don’t they? They pretend to be all sorts of things. Maybe these wrestlers, they’re just good actors. Maybe they’re all in on it, just makin’ fools of us all, taking our hard-earned money.
So, what’s the truth? I don’t rightly know. But I’ll tell you this, it sure made for a good story. And that’s what matters, ain’t it? A good story gets people talkin’, gets ‘em thinkin’. And maybe, just maybe, that’s all it ever was. A story. A real good one.
And wrestling, isn’t it always been a bit of a show? Like those movies with the explosions and the shootin’, only these guys do it live, in front of everybody. And if you think about it that way, the “screwjob” just another part of the show, a way to keep people interested. Maybe Bret didn’t know everything, but maybe he knew enough. Maybe he knew the plan and went along with it for the drama. Makes sense, right? More drama, more money. That’s how things work, don’t they?
And you know, years later, they all seem to be friends again. Bret, Shawn, Vince, they hug it out, talk about it on TV. Now, if someone really screwed you over, would you be huggin’ ‘em later? I don’t think so. But if it was all part of the show, well, then it makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? They played their parts, made their money, and now they can laugh about it. All the way to the bank.
So, there you have it. My two cents on this Mon-tree-all Screw-job. Real or fake, who knows? But it sure was somethin’, wasn’t it? Got everybody talkin’, got everybody watchin’. And that, I reckon, was the whole point.
