Okay, so I’ve been seeing those “like some schools” clues in the NYT Crossword for, like, forever, and they always stumped me. Today, I decided, “No more!” I was gonna figure this thing out, once and for all.
My “Like Some Schools” Deep Dive
First, I grabbed a bunch of recent crosswords – printed them out, old-school style. I needed to see the clues and answers together, you know? I started circling every “like some schools” clue I could find.
Then, I started noticing a pattern. Most of the answers seemed pretty short, usually around three to five letters. I figured it had to be some kind of abbreviation or a really common word.
I spent a good hour just staring at the circled clues and answers, totally lost. It was driving me nuts! I even googled “like some schools crossword help,” but most of the results were just general crossword-solving tips, nothing specific.
Then, I remembered my grandma used to do crosswords all the time. She had this massive dictionary of crossword terms… somewhere. I dug through the attic, found a dusty old box, and there it was! A total crossword dictionary.
I flipped through the dictionary, looking under “schools,” “education,” “types of schools”… nothing. Then, under “abbreviations,” I saw it: “Coed.”
I went back to my circled clues and answers. Bingo! “Coed” fit perfectly for a bunch of them. I felt like a genius, even though it was probably super obvious to experienced crossword solvers.
- “Like some schools” = COED
- “Like some boarding schools” = COED
I am done!
