Alright, so, you wanna know about this word puzzle thing, right? The one them young folks was doin’? The 2023 US Open Crossword, they call it. Sounds fancy, but it’s just a bunch of words put together, you know?
I heard tell there was this kid, a teenager, won the whole shebang. A teenager! Can you believe it? Back in my day, teenagers were out in the fields, not playin’ with no fancy word games. But times change, I guess. This young’un, they call ’em Coco Gauff. Yep, that’s the name. Sounds like somethin’ you’d feed a baby bird, but hey, who am I to judge?
- This Coco kid, they’re real good at tennis too. I don’t know much about tennis, seems like a lot of runnin’ around to me, but folks say they’re a whiz at it. Guess they’re just good at everything, these youngsters.
- Now, this word puzzle thing, it ain’t easy, let me tell ya. It ain’t like them word searches you find in them magazines at the store. This is serious business. You gotta know your words, and you gotta know ’em good. And fast, too! They got timers and all that. Makes my head spin just thinkin’ about it.
They give you clues, you see. Little hints about what the word is. Sometimes they’re easy, like “the opposite of black.” Well, even I know that’s white! But sometimes they’re tricky, real tricky. They use big words, words I ain’t never heard before. Words that make you scratch your head and wonder what they’re even talkin’ about.
But this Coco kid, they figured it all out. They knew all the words, all the tricks. They filled in all them little boxes faster than you can say “jackrabbit.” And they won! Beat out a whole bunch of other folks, some of ‘em probably older and wiser, but Coco, that teenager, they came out on top.
It’s kinda like that baseball movie, the one with the grumpy old man teachin’ them kids how to play. “Bad News Bears,” I think it was called. Nobody expected them kids to win, but they did. Same with Coco. Nobody expected a teenager to win this crossword thing, but they surprised everyone.
I heard they had some big World Series thing too, but in baseball. That fella, Tenace, they say he hit four home runs. Four! Like that ain’t nothin’. And they gave him a prize for it, called him the MVP. Well, Coco, they’re kinda like the MVP of the crossword world, I guess. They hit it out of the park with them words.
Folks say these crosswords, they get harder as the week goes on. Monday ones are easy, like pickin’ berries. But by Saturday, they’re tough as nails. Like tryin’ to get a mule to go where it don’t wanna go. And then on Sunday, they got this big ol’ crossword, takes up a whole page in the newspaper. I don’t even bother lookin’ at that one. Too much for my old eyes.
So, yeah, that’s the story of the teenage winner of the 2023 US Open Crossword. Coco Gauff. Remember that name. They’re a smart one, that kid. Maybe they’ll even teach me a word or two someday. Though I doubt I’ll ever be fillin’ out one of them fancy crosswords myself. I’ll stick to my Sudoku, thank you very much. At least with numbers, you know what you’re gettin’!
Anyways, I hope this all makes some sense to ya. It’s just a bunch of words to me, but I tried to explain it the best I could. This internet thing, it’s somethin’ else, ain’t it? Lettin’ even an old woman like me ramble on about word puzzles and teenagers.
