Alright, let’s talk about this here… whatchamacallit… Land of Lincoln Trophy. Yeah, that’s it. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But lemme tell ya, it’s just a football game, plain and simple.
So, these two teams, Illinois and… uh… Northwestern, they go at it every year. And the winner, they get this here trophy. It’s got a hat on it, like that fella, Abraham Lincoln, used to wear. Fancy, I tell ya. But it ain’t about the hat, it’s about the winnin’.
Now, they been playin’ for this trophy since, what, 2009? Before that, they had some other thing, a tomahawk or somethin’. Don’t matter much now. It’s all about this Land of Lincoln thing now. Illinois, that’s where Lincoln was from, they say. So, it makes sense, I guess. They even call Illinois the “Land of Lincoln.” See, it all fits together, kinda like them puzzle pieces my grandkids play with.
This year, Illinois, they won. Beat Northwestern 38 to 28. That boy, Aidan Laughery, he ran like the wind, scored three touchdowns! Seventeen and two yards he ran, can you believe it? That’s a lot of runnin’, even for a young fella. Good for him, I say. He probably ate his Wheaties that mornin’.
- Game was at Wrigley Field, wherever that is. Sounds like a fancy place.
- Illinois took the trophy back. Guess they lost it last year.
- The score was 38 to 28. A lot of points, if you ask me.
They played this game at the end of the regular season. Don’t know much about seasons, cept’ for plantin’ and harvestin’. But I guess football has seasons too. And this was the last game before… somethin’ else. Playoffs, maybe? Who knows. Too much for this old lady to keep track of.
This trophy, it’s got a big ol’ hat on it. Lincoln’s hat. They say it’s bronze. That’s some kinda metal, I think. Heavy stuff. Wouldn’t wanna drop it on your toe, I tell ya. They had other ideas for the trophy name, you know? Like somethin’ about presidents. Illinois had a bunch of presidents, apparently. But they picked the Lincoln hat. Guess it looks better.
They fight hard for this trophy, these boys. It’s a big deal to them. Like gettin’ the biggest pumpkin at the county fair, I guess. Only, instead of pumpkins, it’s footballs. And instead of ribbons, they get a hat trophy. Makes sense, right? Kinda.
Now, even if Illinois didn’t do so hot last year, only winnin’ five games and losin’ seven, they still came out on top this time. That just goes to show ya, anything can happen in football, just like in life. One day you’re up, next day you’re down, and then maybe you’re back up again. That’s just how it goes. This game they were up, and good for ‘em, I say.
So, that’s the story of this here Land of Lincoln Trophy. Two teams, a hat, and a whole lotta runnin’ around. It ain’t rocket science, but it’s somethin’ folks get excited about. And I guess that’s good enough. Keeps ‘em busy, keeps ‘em outta trouble… most of the time anyway. And that Aidan boy, he’s a real go-getter, that’s for sure. Seventeen and two yards, imagine that! I bet his ma is proud. Anyways, that’s all I got to say about this here trophy thing.
