Alright, so I wanted to figure out the whole story with the Kansas City Chiefs and their playoff games over the years. It feels like they’re always in the mix lately, but I know it wasn’t always like that. So, I decided to actually sit down and piece it together.

First thing I did was just open up my computer and punch “kansas city chiefs playoff history” into the search bar. Nothing fancy. You get a ton of results back, naturally. Lots of sports websites, stats pages, news articles talking about the recent games.
I had to sift through the noise a bit. Lots of headlines about the latest Super Bowl, which is fine, but I wanted the bigger picture. I started clicking on a few links that looked like they might have historical data, not just current season stuff. Some sites are better than others, you know? Some just give you a list of scores, others try to break it down more.
Getting the Core Numbers
I was looking for the main things first. How many times have they actually won the Super Bowl? And how many times did they get there but lose? Stuff like that.
It took a bit of digging, clicking around different tables and summaries. I started jotting down some notes.
Super Bowl Appearances:
- Okay, first big game was way back, Super Bowl I. They lost that one.
- Then they won Super Bowl IV. That was a long time ago!
- Had a long gap after that, really long.
- Then they came back strong and won Super Bowl LIV.
- Got back again the next year for Super Bowl LV, but lost that one.
- Then won again, Super Bowl LVII.
- And just now, won Super Bowl LVIII.
So, tallying that up, that’s four wins out of six tries in the big game. Not too shabby when you look at it like that.
Beyond the Super Bowl
But playoffs aren’t just the Super Bowl, right? There’s all the games before that. I looked for their overall playoff record. Wins versus losses across all playoff games, not just the final one.
Found some stats pages showing their complete playoff game log. It’s a pretty long list when you go all the way back to their AFL days before the merger. They definitely had some strong eras and some pretty lean years too. You can see streaks where they’d make the playoffs a few years in a row, then maybe miss out for a while.
This current era, with Mahomes at the helm, clearly stands out. They’ve been hosting AFC Championship games like it’s a yearly tradition. Before him, making it that far wasn’t nearly as common for them, even though they had some good teams with guys like Len Dawson way back, or Montana for a short bit, and others through the 90s and 2000s.
It’s interesting to see the ups and downs. You get a feel for the history, the near misses, the big wins. It wasn’t just flipping a switch and becoming champions; there was a lot of history leading up to this recent success.

So yeah, that was my little dive into it. Just involved some searching, reading through different summaries, and trying to piece together the timeline and the key results. Gives you a better perspective than just seeing the latest headlines.
