So, I tried this thing called “pen in golf,” and let me tell you, it was a wild ride. I’ve always been terrible at golf, slicing it, hooking it, you name it. But I heard about this “pen grip” and figured, why not?
First, I went to the driving range, grabbed my usual clubs, and started with my regular grip. Yeah, the usual disaster. Balls flying everywhere but where I wanted them to go. I did hit a few ok, but not the best.
Then, I tried this pen thing. The idea is you hold the club like a pen with your dominant hand. The other hand just kind of sits there like it normally does. It felt so weird at first. Like, I had zero control.
- Holding it: I gripped the club like I was about to write my signature on a giant golf ball. My fingers were all bunched up, and it felt totally unnatural.
- Swinging: This was the tricky part. I tried to keep my hands low, which apparently helps with something called “lag.” I also tried to use my legs more, which felt really awkward.
- Hitting: Honestly, the first few swings were a mess. I topped the ball, I whiffed it, I sent it sideways. I was getting a lot of looks for sure. But then, something started to click.
I started focusing on keeping my wrist flat and leaning the shaft forward. There was a point when I was trying to make the wrist to impact so it is flat, and ensure the shaft is leaning forward.
The goal, I think, is to get to this one point where the club is just right and then stop it really fast after you hit the ball. Sounds easy, right? It’s not! But, when I managed to do it, even just a couple of times, the ball went straighter than I’d ever hit it before. Not super far, but straight!
I kept practicing, trying to get that “stop the club” thing down. It’s all about using your muscles in a different way than I was used to. Also, I tried to use different golf balls. They say different balls can make distance and accuracy different. And I did feel like some balls are better than others.
I wouldn’t say I’m suddenly a pro or anything, but I did see some improvement. It’s like, I finally got a taste of what it feels like to hit the ball the right way, even if it was just for a few glorious moments. I still shanked a bunch, don’t get me wrong. I mean, the “pen grip” is just a way, not the only way. Maybe it is not even suitable for me. I need more time to try.
Will I keep using the pen grip?
Maybe. I don’t know. It’s definitely something I’ll keep messing around with. It’s frustrating, but also kind of exciting to think that I might actually be able to get better at this game. So, yeah, that was my adventure with the “pen in golf.” We’ll see what happens next time I hit the course!
