Okay, so let me tell you about this thing I did called “movies at mcgregor.” It all started because I was bored, like, super bored. Summer was dragging, and the only thing on TV was reruns.

I thought, “Hey, why not set up a movie night outside?” I’ve got a decent backyard, and the weather was actually cooperating for once. The initial idea was just to get a few friends together, but things kinda snowballed, you know?
First thing’s first: the equipment. I didn’t want to break the bank, so I started scrounging around. I already had a projector – a cheap one I bought years ago for presentations. Then, I remembered my old bedsheet! It was huge and white, perfect for a makeshift screen. I hung it between two trees, using some rope and those clampy things you use for tarps. (Turns out they’re called “tarp clips,” who knew?).
Next, the sound. The projector’s speakers were garbage. I dug out my old Bluetooth speaker, the one I usually take to the beach. It was loud enough, and I figured it’d do the trick. I tested it out with a YouTube video, making sure the sound synced okay. It wasn’t perfect, but good enough.
Then came the movie choice. I put up a poll on my Instagram stories, asking my followers what they wanted to see. The choices were pretty lame, honestly, but “Guardians of the Galaxy” won by a landslide. Fine by me, it’s a fun movie.
The day of the movie, I started setting up early. I dragged out some old camping chairs and blankets for seating. I also grabbed some cushions from the living room to make things extra comfy. Gotta keep those butts happy, you know?

Food was important, of course. I popped a ton of popcorn and put it in those big red buckets you get at the cinema. I also bought a bunch of candy – chocolate, gummy bears, the whole shebang. And, of course, drinks: soda, juice, and some bottled water. Gotta stay hydrated!
As people started arriving, the atmosphere was buzzing. Everyone was excited about the outdoor movie thing. I even made little “tickets” on my computer and handed them out at the “entrance” (aka, my backyard gate). Silly, I know, but it added to the vibe.
The actual movie went off without a hitch. The picture quality wasn’t amazing, but it was good enough for everyone to see what was happening. The sound was surprisingly decent, and the whole backyard was filled with laughter and cheers. Someone even brought sparklers, which was a bit much, but hey, everyone was having fun.
After the movie, people hung around for a while, chatting and eating leftover popcorn. It was a really chill evening, and everyone said they had a great time.
Would I do it again? Absolutely! It was a bit of a hassle setting everything up, but the payoff was totally worth it. Next time, I’ll probably invest in a better screen and maybe a more powerful speaker. But for a first attempt, “movies at mcgregor” was a total success. I might even make it a regular thing!

- Lessons learned:
- Tarp clips are your friend.
- Always have more popcorn than you think you’ll need.
- Sparklers are a maybe.
- Good company makes any movie better.
