My Go at the Lineup Crossword Thing
So, I bumped into this puzzle type recently, they called it a “lineup crossword”. Never heard of it before, but the name sounded kinda interesting, different from the usual stuff I do. Thought, why not, let’s see what this is all about. Gave it a shot one afternoon when I had some time to kill.

When I first opened it up – it was on some puzzle website, you know – it looked pretty much like any other crossword. You got your grid, your clues listed as ‘Across’ and ‘Down’. Standard fare. So, I just jumped right in, started filling out the answers I knew, same as always. Picked off the easy ones first to get some letters in the grid.
Getting Started
I was just plugging away, filling in words here and there. Some clues were tricky, some were gimmes. Felt pretty normal. But then, maybe halfway through, I started noticing something felt a bit off. A few of the answers seemed related, like they were part of a group. Names, maybe, or types of objects, I wasn’t sure yet. And crucially, there was this separate area below the main grid. It had empty slots, numbered, and was labelled something like “The Final Lineup”. That’s when I paused. Okay, this wasn’t just about filling the squares.
Figuring Out the Twist
I spent a good few minutes just staring at it. Checked if there were any special instructions I’d missed. Nope. So, I went back to the clues and the answers I’d filled in. I focused on those answers that seemed like they belonged together. It clicked after a while – the puzzle wanted me to identify specific answers from the main grid and then arrange them in a particular order in that “Final Lineup” section. The trick was figuring out which answers and what order.

My Process Now
After doing a couple of these, I kinda developed a little system. Here’s basically what I do now when I tackle one:
- I still start by solving the regular crossword clues just like normal. Get as much of the grid filled as possible. This usually helps reveal the potential ‘lineup’ words.
- As I solve, I pay extra attention. If an answer feels like it could be part of a set (e.g., planets, historical figures, colours, whatever the theme seems to be), I make a mental note or scribble it down on the side.
- Once the grid is mostly done, I look at that list of potential ‘special’ answers.
- Then comes the detective work: figuring out the lineup order. Sometimes there’s a hint in the puzzle’s title or a specific clue number might have an asterisk pointing to instructions. Other times, you just have to look at the words themselves. Are they numbers? Put them in order. Are they names? Maybe alphabetical order? Or maybe the order they appeared in the grid?
- Finally, I carefully write those specific answers into the “Final Lineup” slots in the sequence I figured out. This is usually the last step and feels pretty satisfying when you get it right.
Wrapping Up
Honestly, it’s a pretty fun twist on the standard crossword. Makes you engage your brain a bit more, not just with word definitions but also with recognizing patterns and sequences. It felt a bit confusing at first, but now I quite enjoy them when I stumble across one. Adds a nice little challenge. Definitely shakes things up from the everyday puzzle routine.
