Okay, so today I decided to finally settle a debate I’ve been having with my buddies for ages: Ray Lewis vs. London Fletcher – who was the better linebacker?

First, I dug up all the stats I could find. I mean, I went deep – Pro Football Reference, ESPN, old newspaper clippings, you name it. I spent a good couple of hours just collecting everything.
Getting into the Numbers
Then, I organized it all. I created a simple spreadsheet, nothing fancy, just columns for tackles, sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles, Pro Bowls, All-Pro selections, Super Bowl wins… the works. I wanted to have everything side-by-side so I could really compare them.
- Tackles: I started by looking at total tackles. Fletcher actually had more, and I though, “Aha! Maybe my friends were right!”
- Big Plays: But then I got into sacks and interceptions. Ray Lewis had a clear edge there. He was just a more disruptive force, a game-changer.
- Accolades: I moved on to Pro Bowls and All-Pros. Again, Lewis pulled ahead. He was recognized as the best in the league way more often.
- Championships: And finally, the Super Bowl rings. Lewis has two, Fletcher has one. That’s gotta count for something, right?
After all that, I laid it all out. It’s still a close call, I admit. Fletcher was a tackling machine, incredibly consistent. But Ray Lewis? He had that “it” factor, that ability to single-handedly take over a game. My conclusion.
It was a fun deep dive. It took a good chunk of my day, but hey, it’s always fun to get nerdy with football stats!
