Okay, so today I decided to tackle the “Kids Cry” clue in the NYT crossword. Here’s how it went down.

First, I stared at the clue. “Kids Cry”… Hmm. My initial thought was, like, actual children crying. You know, “WAIL” or “SOB”? But those didn’t fit the number of letters I needed.
Then, I tried to think outside the box. What else “kids”? Baby goats! I vaguely remembered something about baby goats… bleating? Is that a word? I googled “baby goat sound” just to be sure.
Yep, “bleat” is definitely a thing. And, lo and behold, it fit perfectly in the crossword squares!
So, I filled it in, feeling pretty darn smug. It’s always satisfying when you get one of those answers that seems totally obvious after you figure it out, but stumps you at first.
My simple step is:
- Read the clue and blank space carefully.
- Think about the words in the clue.
- If did not work, think out of the box.
- Check is the answer match to the blank space.
- Fill it.
That’s all there is to it! Another tiny victory in my ongoing battle with the NYT crossword. Onto the next clue…
