Okay, so I gotta share what went down with my tennis watching plans this year, specifically around the Australian Open 2024. You know how it is, the end of the year wraps up, things get quiet on the tennis front, and then boom, the new season kicks off down under. I always get pretty hyped for it.

Getting Back into the Swing
I remember starting to gear up mentally. December was busy, lots of non-tennis stuff happening. But come early January, I started checking scores again, seeing who was playing where. Brisbane International was on, and that’s usually a good sign the big one, the AO, is just around the corner. I was thinking, right, gotta see the schedule, figure out when the big names are playing. Especially Rafa.
You know, Nadal’s matches are always something else. Even when he was out for a while, you always kinda hoped he’d be back, especially for the Slams. I saw he was playing in Brisbane, which was awesome news. I thought, “Okay, he’s back, testing the waters.” Watched a bit of his matches there, looked pretty decent actually. Got me thinking, “Man, AO 2024 could be interesting.”
Then Came the News…
So, I’m just going about my week, casually scrolling through some news feeds on my phone one morning, probably looking for coffee machine reviews or something totally unrelated. Then I see a headline mentioning Nadal. Didn’t click immediately, sometimes it’s just practice reports. But then I saw another one. And another. All saying something about ‘withdrawal’.
My first thought was, “Nah, can’t be right.”
I finally clicked on one. And yeah, there it was. He had to pull out of the Australian Open. Apparently, during one of his matches in Brisbane, he felt something. A muscle thing, a micro tear they called it. Not the same big injury as before, thankfully, but still bad enough to stop him playing a best-of-five sets Grand Slam tournament right after.

- Checked a couple of different sources, just to be sure.
- Felt that familiar kinda sinking feeling you get when a player you look forward to watching isn’t gonna be there.
- Immediately thought back to his epic win there in 2022. That final was insane.
Just Like That, Plans Change
It’s funny how quickly your excitement for a specific part of an event can just deflate. It’s not like the whole tournament is ruined, there are tons of other great players. But Nadal brings a certain energy, you know? Those marathon matches, the fight… it’s just different when he’s in the draw.
So yeah, found out just like that, scrolling on my phone. He posted about it himself too, saying he wasn’t ready for the high demands of slam matches yet and needed to head back home to Spain. Total bummer. You gotta respect the decision, health comes first, especially after all the injuries he’s battled. But still, as a fan just hoping to see him play, it was a real letdown to my AO 2024 hype.
Now I’m just hoping he recovers well. The season’s long, hopefully, we’ll see him back on court soon. But yeah, the start of my AO viewing definitely felt a bit different without him there.
