How Much Do NFL General Managers Make?
Well now, you might be wonderin’ how much them NFL general managers get paid. I reckon it’s a question that pops up in folks’ minds when they hear about the big money folks in football. Them general managers, or GMs as they call ’em, they make a pretty penny, that’s for sure, but it ain’t all the same for everyone. Just like anything else, there’s a wide range in what they earn, dependin’ on how long they’ve been in the job and how good they are at it.
Now, most of ’em make somewhere around $1 million a year, that’s the low end of it. But it can go way up, all the way to about $7.5 million a year for some of ’em. It’s a big gap, I know, but the thing is, them seasoned veterans, they been around the block a few times. They know what they’re doin’. While some of the younger folks, they just get started, so they got to prove themselves before they see a big jump in that paycheck.
On average, most NFL general managers make ’bout $1.5 million a year. But like I said, it ain’t the same for all of ’em. Take Bill Belichick, for example. He’s been doin’ this for years, and he’s the highest-paid GM in the whole league, pullin’ in a hefty $7.5 million a year. Some folks might think that sounds like a lot, but when you’re runnin’ a big team like the Patriots, I reckon it’s just the cost of doin’ business.
But let me tell ya, it ain’t too common for team owners to also be the general manager. Still, there’s one feller who fits that bill—Jerry Jones, the owner of them Dallas Cowboys. He’s been both the owner and GM for his team, which is mighty unusual. Most other teams got separate folks doin’ the owner job and the GM job. And the Cincinnati Bengals, well, they don’t even have an official GM, ain’t that somethin’?
If you’re curious about how much them assistant general managers make, well, it’s still pretty good, though not as high as the top dogs. They make about $201,000 a year on average. That’s well above the national average for folks workin’ other jobs, but it ain’t near what them main GMs make. Still, I reckon you wouldn’t mind havin’ a job like that, would ya?
Now, I reckon you’re askin’ yourself if this job pays better than some other football jobs. Well, if you think about them head coaches, you might be surprised to know there’s no salary cap for them, just like the general managers. But their pay usually ain’t as high as them star players, though. It’s hard to beat them player salaries, especially when you’re talkin’ ’bout the top guys like Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady, who make a fortune.
But let’s get back to the GMs. You might be thinkin’, “What do they actually do to earn all this money?” Well, them GMs got a mighty big responsibility. They’re in charge of buildin’ the team, pickin’ players in the draft, tradin’, and signin’ free agents. They’re the ones who make them big decisions that affect the whole team. If the team does good, the GM gets the credit, and if the team does bad, well, they might be lookin’ for a new job.
There’s also somethin’ else that affects them GMs’ pay. Some of ’em, like the ones in big markets, or the ones runnin’ high-profile teams, they can make even more money ’cause they’re bringin’ in more revenue. A team like the Dallas Cowboys, for example, they got a lotta money comin’ in, so they can afford to pay their GM real well. But for smaller-market teams, the pay might not be as high.
And then you got folks like Adam Peters, the assistant GM for the San Francisco 49ers. He’s been a top candidate for a while now. Folks talk about him movin’ up and takin’ over as a GM somewhere. Who knows, maybe he’ll be makin’ millions like the top GMs in the league someday. Ain’t no tellin’ what might happen when you’ve got the right skills and experience!
So, there ya have it. NFL general managers make a lotta money, but just like any other job, it ain’t all the same for everyone. Some make a little, some make a lot, and it all depends on where they’re at in their career. But one thing’s for sure: it’s a big responsibility, and they sure do earn that paycheck, no matter how much it is!
