Alright, so let me tell you about this deep dive I took into the 2015 Houston Cougars football season. It all started when I was just kinda bored one weekend and stumbled upon a highlight reel online.

The Beginning: Just Curious
I wasn’t really a college football fanatic, but the energy in that reel was infectious. I saw some crazy plays, a quarterback slinging the ball all over the field, and a team that just seemed to have a swagger. I thought, “Hey, why not learn more?”
Digging into the Archives
So, I started digging. First stop was, of course, the usual suspects: ESPN, *, all those kinda places. I wanted to get the basic stats, the win-loss record, who they played, and what the scores were. Just to get a lay of the land, you know?
- I found out they went 13-1 that year. Pretty solid!
- They were coached by Tom Herman. That name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it at first.
- Their quarterback was Greg Ward Jr. I’d soon be seeing a lot more of him.
Going Deeper: Game Film

Stats are cool and all, but I wanted to see the actual games. YouTube became my best friend. I searched for full game replays, highlight packages, anything I could get my hands on. It took some digging, because not every game is readily available, but I managed to piece together a good amount of footage.
- Watched their game against Memphis. What a shootout!
- Found some grainy footage of their win against Louisville. The defense was on fire that day.
Analyzing the Offense
Greg Ward Jr. was the real deal. The dude was a dual-threat quarterback before everyone started calling every quarterback a dual-threat. He could run, he could throw, and he made some unbelievable plays.
I noticed they ran a lot of read-option, which was pretty trendy at the time, but they ran it really well. They also had some speedy receivers who could stretch the field. The offensive line wasn’t the biggest, but they were quick and athletic, which fit their scheme perfectly.
Breaking Down the Defense

The defense was aggressive and opportunistic. They weren’t afraid to blitz, and they forced a lot of turnovers. I remember watching a game where they had like five interceptions. Crazy stuff!
They weren’t always the most disciplined, though. Sometimes they would give up some big plays because they were gambling too much. But, hey, that’s part of what made them fun to watch.
The Coaching Factor
Tom Herman definitely had these guys playing with confidence. He was a young, energetic coach who seemed to connect with his players. I think that’s why they were able to pull off some upsets that year.
My Takeaways

So, after all that digging and watching, what did I learn? Well, the 2015 Houston Cougars were a really fun team to watch. They played with a lot of energy and excitement, and they had some really talented players.
It also reminded me that college football can be really unpredictable. You never know when a team is going to come out of nowhere and have a special season. And that’s what makes it so exciting!
Anyway, that’s my story of how I spent a good chunk of time diving into the 2015 Houston Cougars football season. Hope you enjoyed it!
