Okay, so I decided to head out to the Rocket Mortgage Classic this year. Wasn’t really planning anything special, just wanted to catch some golf, enjoy the day, you know?
Got there, started walking the course. Pretty standard stuff. Crowds, sun, the usual buzz. But then I started noticing something. These little green ribbons. Not everywhere at first, but sprinkled around. Saw one pinned on a volunteer’s shirt. Then on a couple of fans walking past. Then one of the players had it on his hat.
It wasn’t flashy, just a simple green ribbon.
Normally, I might not think twice. Lots of events have colors for causes. But green… that kinda stuck with me for a second. Made me think about my brother-in-law, Mike. He served, came back different. Not bad different, just… carried stuff, you know? We don’t talk about it much, nobody in the family really does. But you see it sometimes. He pushes through, works hard, but it’s there.
So seeing these green ribbons, it just clicked in a different way for me this time. Wasn’t just a color, felt like a little signal. Like a quiet nod to folks like Mike, maybe? Or maybe others dealing with their own battles. I don’t know for sure what the official reason was, didn’t stop to ask, felt kinda personal just seeing them.
My Own Little Step
I kept walking, watched some shots. But I kept noticing the ribbons. Felt a bit weird not having one, like I was outside of something quiet but important happening.

- Saw a small table near the 18th green.
- They had a basket full of them.
- Just walked up.
- Picked one up.
- Pinned it on my own shirt.
Didn’t say anything to anyone. The person there just gave a little smile. That was it. Felt right, though. Like joining in that quiet nod I mentioned.
It’s funny how small things work.
Watched the rest of the day with that ribbon on. Didn’t change the golf, obviously. But it changed things for me, just a little bit. Felt like I was carrying a little reminder, maybe for Mike, maybe just for the idea that it’s okay to acknowledge stuff without making a big fuss.
Took it off when I got home, put it on my dresser. Still sitting there. Just a plain green ribbon from a golf tournament. But yeah, it was a good thing to see, a good thing to do. Simple as that.
