This here thing, this “green booking”, it’s got me all riled up. You see these young folks talkin’ ’bout it all the time. What’s it all about? It’s a NYT crossword thing, they say. Sounds like a load of hogwash to me. But my granddaughter, she’s smart as a whip, she tried to explain it.
She says it’s like, you know, you wanna stay someplace, but you wanna be good to the earth, too. Like plantin’ trees ‘stead of choppin’ ’em down. This green booking, it’s about findin’ a place that’s, what’s the word… eco-somethin’. ECOHOTEL. That’s it! Eight letters, she says. Fits right in them little squares in the puzzle.
Now, I don’t know much about them puzzles. Never had time for ’em. Too busy tendin’ to the chickens and the garden. But this green booking thing, this ECOHOTEL, it got me thinkin’. Maybe it ain’t so bad, this newfangled way of doin’ things.

My granddaughter, she showed me on her phone, you can find these ECOHOTELs all over. Places that don’t use so much water, or maybe they got them solar panels, like my neighbor, Jebediah. He’s got ’em on his roof. Says it saves him a pretty penny on his electric bill. Maybe these ECOHOTELs are onto somethin’.
This NYT crossword, it’s got all sorts of clues, she says. Sometimes they’re tricky, like riddles. But this “green booking” one, it seems to be popular. Lots of folks searchin’ for it. ECOHOTEL, eight letters. Gotta remember that.
I asked her, “Why’s it called ‘green’ anyway?” She said it’s ’cause it’s good for the planet, like green trees and grass. Makes sense, I reckon. We gotta take care of this old earth. Ain’t got another one, you know.
These crossword clue things, they get people talkin’, I guess. Even old folks like me. I still don’t understand all them little squares and numbers, but I get the gist of it. You gotta use your brain, think hard. Like figurin’ out how to keep the crows out of the cornfield.
She says there’s all sorts of answers in them databases. 40 possible answers for this one clue. I find many possible answers for this thing. It’s a lot. If you’re still no good, you can find on that internet thing, many answers. They help you with the puzzle. This puzzle, it’s got a mind of its own, I swear.
This here green booking, this ECOHOTEL, it’s somethin’ to think about. Maybe next time I go visit my sister, Bertha, in the city, I’ll try to find one of these places. See what all the fuss is about. Might even be kinda nice, stayin’ someplace that’s good for the earth.
I remember my granddaughter told me somethin’ else. This NYT crossword, it gets harder every day. Like Monday is easy, like milkin’ a cow. Saturday is the hardest. Like wranglin’ a greased pig! And Sunday? That one’s big. Real big.
My granddaughter say there’s a thing that can be a letter, number, or picture. It’s for a word in puzzle. And sometimes the puzzle have some words from speaking, not real meaning. It’s like the words we use in our daily talk.
And they got a date too, on the paper, August 25, she say. I don’t know about that thing too, but she find it. August 24 2023, today’s paper, there have more clues. You just use that Master Topic thing. Don’t ask me what that is.
I still don’t rightly understand this whole NYT crossword thing. But this green booking, this ECOHOTEL, that makes sense. Take care of the earth, and she’ll take care of you. That’s what my mama always used to say. And she was right about most things.
Well, I gotta go. The sun’s goin’ down, and the chickens need to be put up. But I’ll be thinkin’ about this green booking, this ECOHOTEL. Maybe it’s not such a bad idea after all. Maybe there’s 30 answers to that. Who know? Maybe I’ll even try one of them puzzles sometime. But don’t tell anyone I said that. This crossword clue thing is more than that.
