Okay, so I’ve been digging into this whole “best boxing trainers of all time” thing, and man, it’s a rabbit hole! Here’s how I went about figuring this out, and it got messy, I gotta tell ya.

First, I started just Googling, you know, “best boxing trainers ever.” I got a bunch of lists, articles, forum posts… it was information overload. Everyone had a different opinion, different top 10s, different criteria. It was a mess.
So, I decided I needed to narrow things down. I figured, “Okay, what actually makes a great trainer?” Was it the number of champions they produced? Their win percentage? How innovative their techniques were? Or was it something more… intangible, like their ability to motivate and connect with fighters?
I started making a spreadsheet (yeah, I’m that guy). I listed out all the names that kept popping up: Cus D’Amato, Eddie Futch, Angelo Dundee, Freddie Roach, Emanuel Steward… the list went on and on.
- Cus D’Amato
- Eddie Futch
- Angelo Dundee
- Freddie Roach
- Emanuel Steward
Then, I tried to find stats for each trainer. Stuff like how many world champions they’d trained, their fighters’ win-loss records, any major awards they’d won. Finding this stuff was HARD. Some of it was easy to find, other bits were buried in old articles or forum posts. Some of it was just plain impossible to find.
Next, I dove into biographies and documentaries. I wanted to get a feel for their training styles, their philosophies, how they interacted with their fighters. This was actually the most fun part. You get these amazing stories about how these guys built champions from the ground up, not just physically, but mentally too.

After that, I spent time looking at how they were to their boxers, how they cultivated their boxers’ abilities, and so on.
Finally, I realized there’s no single “best” trainer. It’s all subjective! It depends on what you value most. Some trainers were great at building raw talent, others were masters of strategy, and others were incredible motivators. It really comes down to personal preference and what you’re looking for in a trainer.
So, yeah, that’s my journey down the rabbit hole of the best boxing trainers of all time. It was messy, it was complicated, and I definitely didn’t come up with a definitive answer. But I learned a heck of a lot along the way!
