Yesterday, I felt like playing some golf. The weather was nice, so I texted a few of my buddies to see if they wanted to join. Luckily, a few of them were free, so we decided to meet up at the local golf course. We picked a course that none of us had played before, just for kicks.
When we got there, we started discussing what kind of game we wanted to play. We tossed around a few ideas, like a regular stroke play or maybe a scramble. Then, one of my friends suggested a shamble. I’d heard of it before, but I’d never actually played it. He explained the basic rules, and it sounded like a fun twist on the usual scramble format.
How to Play a Shamble
- We all teed off from each hole, just like normal.
- Then, we picked the best drive out of the group.
- From there, everyone played their own ball into the hole from that spot.
- We then recorded the lowest score among us as the “team score.”
We decided to give it a shot. The first hole was a par 4. We all hit our drives, and thankfully, one of my buddies crushed his right down the middle of the fairway. We all picked up our balls and moved to his spot. From there, it felt a bit weird playing my own ball again, but it was actually kind of nice to have that individual challenge while still feeling like we were playing as a team.
We continued like that for the rest of the round. Some holes went great, others were a bit of a disaster. On one par 5, two of us ended up in the water, and another found a bunker. We still managed to get a decent score, though, thanks to the one good drive we had. It was pretty interesting to see how our scores varied even though we all started from the same spot after the tee shot.
Playing a shamble definitely added a fun element to the game. It took some of the pressure off since we had a good starting point on each hole, but it also kept things competitive since we were still playing our own balls. Plus, it was just a good excuse to hang out with friends and enjoy the day. In the end, we decided that the shamble was a pretty solid format, and we’d definitely play it again sometime.
Overall, it was a fun day on the course. The shamble format turned out to be a great way to mix things up. We ended up having a few laughs, hitting some good shots, and enjoying the friendly competition. I think I’ll suggest a shamble again next time we all get together for a round of golf.
