Okay, so I’ve been messing around with Apex Legends lately, trying to squeeze every last drop of performance out of my aging rig. I stumbled across this “fps max” thing in the launch options and figured, why not give it a shot? Here’s how it went down.

First, I opened up my Steam library. You know, the usual drill. Right-clicked on Apex Legends, and clicked on “Properties”.
Then, I found the “Launch Options” section. It’s usually at the bottom of the “General” tab. There was already some stuff in there from previous tinkering, so I just added a space and typed in +fps_max unlimited
.
Trying Different Settings
Initially, I set it to “unlimited,” thinking, “Let’s go wild!” But honestly, it didn’t feel much different. Maybe a little smoother, but nothing groundbreaking. So, I did some digging.
I read some forum posts and saw people recommending setting it to a specific number, like your monitor’s refresh rate or slightly above. My monitor is 144Hz, so I tried a few values:
+fps_max 144
+fps_max 160
+fps_max 200
I found that using a specific number related to refresh rate helped the game feel smoother and helped my components not overwork so hard.

I played a few matches with each setting, paying attention to how smooth it felt and if I noticed any screen tearing or stuttering. I think somewhere between 160 and 200 felt the best for my system. It’s a bit subjective, though. You gotta experiment and see what works for your setup.
After a bit more tweaking and a few more matches, I think I’ve settled on +fps_max 180
. Seems to be the sweet spot for me. It’s definitely smoother than before, and I haven’t noticed any major downsides.
So yeah, that’s my little adventure with the “fps max” launch option in Apex. Give it a try, mess around with the numbers, and see if it helps you out!
