Okay, so I’ve been meaning to mess around with my swing, and I keep hearing about Fred Couples, right? Smooth, effortless power – that’s the dream. So, I decided to dedicate a whole day to trying to, you know, “channel my inner Freddie.”
Warm-up Woes
First things first, I hit the range. Started with some stretches, tried to loosen up like I’ve seen Freddie do. Let me tell you, I am not as flexible as that guy. I felt like a rusty old gate trying to swing open.
Then I grabbed my pitching wedge. I figured I’d start small, get a feel for things. Nope. First few shots? Chunked. Like, full-on divots the size of dinner plates. I swear, the groundskeeper probably glared at me from across the range.
Trying to Get That Tempo
The big thing with Couples is his tempo, right? It’s all slow and smooth. So, I focused on that. Took a few practice swings, really trying to feel that easy backswing, that pause at the top… and then… thwack. Topped it. Skittered across the ground like a scared rabbit.
I kept at it, though. I tried to visualize Couples’ swing, tried to mimic that effortless motion. Every now and then, I’d get a decent shot. A nice, clean strike, good trajectory. But then, the next one would be a shank, a slice, a hook… you name it.
Driver Disasters
After a bucket of balls with the irons (and a growing collection of divots), I decided to pull out the driver. This is where Freddie really shines, right? That booming, effortless drive. I teed up the ball, took a deep breath, and… let it rip.

Let’s just say the results were… mixed. Mostly bad. I think I hit one decent drive out of ten. The rest? Well, there was one that went straight up in the air, one that went about 50 yards to the right, and a couple that I completely whiffed. Yeah, whiffed. With a driver. It was embarrassing.
Putting Practice (Slightly Better)
Feeling defeated, I headed to the putting green. Figured I couldn’t do much worse. And you know what? Putting was actually… okay. I mean, I wasn’t sinking everything, but I felt a little bit more like a golfer, and a little less like a flailing windmill.
I practiced some long putts, some short putts, tried to get a feel for the speed of the green. It wasn’t Freddie Couples smooth, but it was something.
The Takeaway
- Fred Couples is a golfing god. I am not.
- Tempo is important. But it’s also really, really hard to get right.
- Swinging a golf club is harder than it looks. Especially when you’re trying to copy a legend.
- Practice makes… well, maybe not perfect, but hopefully a little less embarrassing.
So, that was my day trying to be like Fred Couples. I’m sore, I’m tired, and my golf game is still, shall we say, a work in progress. But hey, at least I got some fresh air and some exercise. And maybe, just maybe, I learned a tiny bit about that smooth, effortless swing. Maybe I’ll get a few more balls, and hit the green again soon! I’ll keep you guys updated.
