Alright folks, gather ’round! Today I’m spilling the beans on a little project I tackled recently: a football quarterback hand warmer. Sounds simple, right? Well, let me tell you, it was a journey!

It all started when my son’s team’s quarterback was complaining about his hands getting too cold during those late-season games. I thought, “Hey, I can probably rig something up for that!” So, I started by brainstorming. What keeps things warm? Insulation, of course! And maybe a little bit of extra heat.
First things first, I grabbed an old, thick wool sock. You know, the kind that’s too worn out to wear but too good to throw away? I cut off the foot part and started playing around with the remaining tube. This would be the base of the hand warmer.
Next, I needed insulation. I remembered seeing some of that reflective bubble wrap stuff at the hardware store. It’s usually used for insulating pipes, but I figured it could work here too. So, I drove down there, picked up a roll, and cut out a piece that would fit inside the sock. I made sure to leave a little extra room so the quarterback could actually get his hands in there!
Now, for the heat. I didn’t want anything too complicated, so I opted for those disposable hand warmer packets. You know, the kind you shake up and they get all toasty? I bought a bunch of those and figured I could sew in a little pocket inside the warmer to hold them.
Here’s where things got a little tricky. I’m no seamstress, but I can manage a basic stitch. I carefully sewed a little fabric pouch onto the inside of the bubble wrap lining. It was a bit wonky, but it held the hand warmer packet just fine.

Then, I slipped the bubble wrap lining with the pouch inside the wool sock. It was a snug fit, which was exactly what I wanted. I sewed the top of the sock closed, leaving a small opening for the quarterback to slide his hands in and out.
The moment of truth! I gave the hand warmer to my son, and he took it to practice. He came back later with a big grin on his face. The quarterback loved it! He said it kept his hands nice and warm, and he could still grip the ball without any problems.
Of course, there were a few tweaks I had to make. The first version was a little too bulky, so I trimmed down the bubble wrap a bit. I also added a little strap so he could attach it to his belt. But overall, it was a success! Not bad for a repurposed sock, some bubble wrap, and a little bit of elbow grease.
So, there you have it. My DIY football quarterback hand warmer. It’s not pretty, but it gets the job done. And that’s what matters, right?
- Find an old wool sock.
- Grab some reflective bubble wrap.
- Buy disposable hand warmer packets.
- Sew a pouch inside the bubble wrap.
- Assemble everything and test!
Hope this inspires you to try your own little project! You never know what you can create with a little bit of ingenuity.
