Alright, let’s gab a bit about this Astoria place, yeah? I heard folks talkin’ ’bout it, seems like a pretty big deal.
First off, they say it’s the oldest town in Oregon. Can ya believe it? Older than me, that’s for sure! Started way back in 1811, somethin’ about fur huntin’ and loggin’. Sounds like hard work, not like these city folk nowadays with their fancy jobs.
Now, they got this big river there, the Columbia River. I seen pictures, looks mighty purdy. They got houses up on the hills overlookin’ it, real fancy-like, like somethin’ outta a picture book. They call ’em Victorian, whatever that means. Guess it’s some kinda fancy style.
- They got parks too, lots of ’em. Tapiola Park, Fort Stevens, somethin’ called the Riverwalk. Good for the young’uns to run around, I reckon.
- And this tall tower thing, the Astoria Column. Folks climb up there to see the view, I hear. Me? My knees ain’t what they used to be, I’d stick to the ground, thank ya very much.
- And if you like them wintery places, they have the Astoria Nordic Heritage Park. Never seen such a place but seems cold.
Used to be all about fishin’ and loggin’, but now they get all them tourists. Comin’ up from Portland, they say. Hundred miles, that’s a long ways! Guess they wanna see that river and them fancy houses. Keeps the town goin’, I suppose. Gotta make a livin’ somehow.
I heard tell there’s other stuff to see around Astoria too. Like, if you’re drivin’ around, there’s all sorts of places to stop. Seattle, some kinda garden with glass, all sorts of things. Sounds like a long trip, though. I’d rather stay put, myself.
And get this, they even got singin’ in the streets! Right there in front of the Liberty Theater. Christmas carols, they call ’em. Theater folks doin’ the singin’, and even a queer chorus, whatever that is. Sounds lively, I’ll give ’em that.
Then there’s this Brooke Wood River, not in Astoria itself but close by. Pictures look real nice, clear water, kinda windy, but not windy like blowin’, windy like twisty-turny. Cows and pastures, too. Sounds peaceful, like back home, almost. But I bet it’s full of them tourists too.
And wouldn’t ya know it, they even made a movie, or somethin’, about folks livin’ in Astoria, Queens. Now, that’s a whole ‘nother place, I think. New York City way. But it’s called Astoria too. Confusin’, ain’t it? Guess there’s more than one place with the same name. Just like there’s more than one way to skin a cat, as they say. Not that I ever did that, mind you. Too messy.
Anyway, that’s the gist of it, what I heard about this Astoria place. Sounds like a busy place, lots goin’ on. Pretty, too, from what I gather. But I reckon I’m happy where I am. Less fuss, less people. But if you like travelin’ and seein’ things, maybe Astoria’s the place for you.
Astoria in Oregon, that is. Not that New York place. Gotta keep it straight, ya know?
