Well, let me tell ya, this one’s a real doozy. If you didn’t see that collision, you missed a heck of a show, I tell ya! It happened out there on the baseball field between them two teams – the University of Southern Indiana and the University of St. Thomas. Now, I don’t know much about all them fancy college names, but I can tell you this: when them boys collided, it was like two freight trains slamming into each other. That’s how hard it looked.
So, here’s what happened: them two teams were out there playin’ like they usually do, but in that moment, one of ’em made a run for it, and bam! A big ol’ crash right in the middle of the field. You could hear the thud from all the way back at my house, I swear. The players from St. Thomas, well, they were all geared up for the play, but the poor fella from Southern Indiana just couldn’t avoid that hit.
Now, I reckon some folks might think it was just part of the game, but I’m tellin’ ya, it looked like one of them hits that’d leave ya knockin’ on heaven’s door! The way them two boys hit the dirt, you’d think they was playin’ football instead of baseball! I’ve seen a lot of plays in my day, but this one had me sittin’ up straight in my chair. It was a tough ol’ hit, for sure.
But let me back up and tell ya a bit more about these teams. From what I can gather, St. Thomas is one of them teams that’s been playin’ for years. They got themselves a whole big team of players, and some of ’em look like they’re real serious about it, like that Joe Ricchio fella. He’s a catcher, but he’s got a real good eye for the game, it seems. They say he’s from Pleasant Prairie, Illinois. I don’t know where that is, but he sure knows how to play the game.
Then there’s that Thomas Emerich kid, the first baseman. Now, I don’t know much about first basemen, but I reckon this one’s pretty good, ‘cause I heard he walked and stole second base! That’s right, stole second! Now, I don’t know how much y’all know about baseball, but stealing a base is no easy task, let me tell ya. So when Joe Ricchio hit that single, Emerich came on home, and the score was up to 8-4. They were leadin’ pretty good after that.
But that collision? It was more than just a game moment. It was the kind of thing that makes you hold your breath. Them boys were down for a minute, and I could see the other players lookin’ real worried. But that’s the thing about baseball, ain’t it? One minute, you’re all focused on the ball, and the next, you’re worryin’ about your teammate who just got hit like a ton of bricks.
Now, I’m not one to say it’s a bad thing, ‘cause in the world of baseball, accidents happen. But boy, that was a big one! Ain’t no one out there ever expectin’ to get slammed like that. You could see the coaches on both sides were real concerned, and I reckon that’s a good thing. They care about them boys, more than just the game itself.
So, if you ever find yourself watchin’ a game between St. Thomas and Southern Indiana, remember that play. It’ll go down in history as one of them moments you won’t forget. And who knows, it might just make you appreciate the game a little more, ‘cause after all, it ain’t all about the hits and runs. Sometimes, it’s about them tough plays that remind ya just how much them boys put into the game.
Now, I don’t know what’s next for them boys, but I sure hope they’re both okay. I reckon they’ll get up, dust themselves off, and be ready for the next game. That’s what baseball’s all about, after all – you take your hits, and you keep on playin’!
