So, I’ve been digging into the whole Dallas Cowboys mascot thing, and let me tell you, it’s been quite a ride. I started by just wanting to know what the mascot’s name was, you know, the basics. I figured it was probably something obvious, but I wanted to be sure.
First, I just did a quick search online. Turns out, the mascot’s name is Rowdy. Pretty straightforward, right? But then I started finding out there was another popular one before, named Crazy Ray. This made me more curious.
I found out that Rowdy’s been around since 1996. He’s this big, friendly-looking cowboy dude. He’s got the whole getup, you know?
- Big cowboy hat
- Cowboys jersey (number 00, which they apparently say as “double zero”)
- Chaps
- Cowboy boots
He looks like he’d be fun at a game. He replaced that other guy, Crazy Ray, who died in 2007.
Then I got into the history of it. Apparently, they tried out this character called “Big D” back in the early ’90s. I guess that didn’t stick, and they went with Rowdy instead. I can’t imagine what Big D was like, but I guess Rowdy was the better choice.
I also found out Rowdy does a lot more than just show up at games. He’s involved in all sorts of community stuff, which is pretty cool. They had a list of some things:
- Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
- Salvation Army
- Special Olympics
- Make-A-Wish Foundation
Training Camp Shenanigans
And get this, at the Cowboys training camp, he’s got this whole “Rowdy’s Kid Zone” thing. He plays with the kids, runs them through obstacle courses, and just generally keeps them entertained. Sounds like a good time, to be honest.
Mascot Convention?
The weirdest thing I found out is that there’s apparently an annual mascot convention. Seriously! Rowdy goes to this thing and hangs out with other NFL mascots. They share ideas and try to figure out how to be even more, well, mascot-y. I can only imagine what that’s like. A bunch of people in giant costumes running around, comparing notes. Wild.
So, yeah, that’s my deep dive into the Dallas Cowboys mascot. It started simple, but I ended up learning way more than I expected. Who knew there was so much to a guy in a cowboy outfit?
