Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into modding for a while, and Fire Emblem Warriors seemed like a good place to start. I specifically wanted to mess around with the costumes, you know, give the characters a different look. Here’s how it went down.

First, I needed the right tools. I spent a good chunk of time just searching online, reading forums, and watching tutorials. It felt like I was learning a new language! Eventually, I figured out I needed a few key things:
- Some sort of file extraction tool. The game files are all packed up, so I needed something to unpack them. I ended up finding one, that could handle these specific files.
- A model viewer/editor. This was crucial for, well, viewing the models and making changes. I stumbled across one that seemed pretty user-friendly.
- Image editing software. Since I wanted to change textures (the “skin” of the models), I needed something like GIMP. Thankfully, that’s free and I’d used something similar a very long time.
The first step was extracting the files. I won’t lie, this was a bit nerve-wracking. I was terrified of messing something up and breaking the game. But, I followed the instructions I found online very carefully, and…success! I had a bunch of folders full of files. It was like opening a treasure chest, even though I didn’t really know what half of them were.
Next, I loaded up the model viewer. I found the character I wanted to modify – let’s just say it was a certain sword-wielding lord – and opened up their model file. Seeing the 3D model right there was pretty cool. I could rotate it, zoom in, and even see the different parts that made up the character.
Now for the actual costume change. This involved finding the texture files associated with the model. These are basically images that are “wrapped” around the 3D model to give it color and detail. I located the ones for the default costume and opened them up in my image editor.
This is where the creative part started. I decided to go for a simple color swap at first. I replaced the blue parts of the costume with red. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it was my modification! I saved the modified texture files, making sure to keep the original names and file formats (this is important!).

The final step was putting everything back together. I used the same tools to insert modded files back into the archive files. I launched the game, holding my breath… and there it was! My sword lord, now sporting a fiery red outfit. It was a small change, but it felt like a huge accomplishment.
It’s definitely a learning process. I’ve had some crashes, some textures that looked completely wrong, and moments where I thought I’d ruined everything. But, it’s been super rewarding to see my changes actually show up in the game. I’m already planning my next project – maybe a full armor redesign? We’ll see!
