Alright, so today I was messing around with this whole “Kirk or Dell” thing. It all started when I was trying to figure out the best way to organize my new home office setup. I’ve got a ton of tech, and I needed a solid way to keep it all neat and tidy.

First, I googled around a bit, you know, just to see what other folks were doing. I saw a bunch of different options, from fancy custom-built desks to simple shelves. But then I stumbled upon these two names: Kirk and Dell. Seemed like they were both popular choices for… something. I wasn’t totally sure what at first.
So, I dug a little deeper. Turns out, we’re talking about different approaches to cable management and overall desk organization. “Kirk” apparently refers to the IKEA KALLAX shelves—those square-grid things you see everywhere. And “Dell,” well, that seemed to be more about using Dell-branded accessories or a specific style of minimalist setup.
My Experiment
I decided to try both, in my own way. I already had a KALLAX unit I wasn’t using, so that was easy. I grabbed some boxes that fit neatly inside the squares and started sorting my cables, chargers, and other small tech bits. It looked pretty good, actually! Much better than the jumbled mess I had before.
- Pros of KALLAX (Kirk):
- Super affordable.
- Modular – you can add more units as needed.
- Lots of accessories available (drawers, doors, etc.).
Then, for the “Dell” approach, I took inspiration from some pictures I found online. The key seemed to be keeping things minimal. I cleared off my desk, leaving only the essentials: my laptop, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I used cable ties to bundle everything neatly behind the monitor and ran the cables along the back edge of the desk.
- Pros of the “Dell” style:
- Clean, minimalist look.
- Forces you to be disciplined about what you keep on your desk.
- Can be done with any desk, you don’t need Dell products.
The Verdict
Honestly, both methods work! It really comes down to personal preference. The KALLAX is great for storage, while the “Dell” style is all about that clean, clutter-free aesthetic. I ended up using a combination of both.

I have all the cables in the back using ties and some of my accessories are stored in the KALLAX.
I used the KALLAX for storing larger items and embraced the minimalist vibe for my actual desktop. Works like a charm!
So, if you’re struggling with desk clutter, give either of these a shot. Or mix and match like I did! It’s all about finding what works best for you and your stuff.
