Okay, so today I decided to dive into this whole Coco Gauff and Serena Williams comparison that’s been buzzing around. I’ve been seeing it everywhere, and I wanted to see what the fuss was all about, from a purely practical, on-the-court perspective.

First, I watched a bunch of match highlights. I started with some of Serena’s older matches, especially from her early years when she was really making a name for herself. I wanted to get a good feel for her raw power and aggressive style.
Then, I switched over to Coco’s recent games. I focused on her matches against top players to see how she handles pressure and different playing styles. It’s one thing to look good against lower-ranked players, but another to hold your own against the best.
My Observations
- Serving Power: I noticed immediately that both have killer serves. Serena’s, obviously, is legendary. But Coco’s is developing into a serious weapon. I was actually surprised by how much heat she’s getting on it already.
- Groundstrokes: Serena’s forehand is a thing of beauty. Pure power. Coco’s is solid, too, but she seems to rely more on her backhand, which is super consistent. I spent some time really looking at their footwork on these shots, too.
- Movement: This is where I saw some big differences. Serena, especially in her prime, was incredibly fast. Coco’s quick, no doubt, but she seems to glide more, while Serena really exploded into her shots. I tried to mimic both styles in my living room (don’t judge!).
- Mental Game: This is harder to gauge from just watching, but I focused on their reactions after winning and losing points. Serena’s known for her intensity, and you can see that fire in Coco, too. It’s that “never give up” attitude.
After all that watching, I grabbed my own racquet and headed to the local courts. My goal wasn’t to become either of them (obviously!), but to try and incorporate some of what I’d observed.
I worked on my serve, trying to get that extra bit of power by really driving up with my legs. I focused on my footwork, trying to stay low and move explosively to the ball. Honestly, I was exhausted after about 30 minutes, but it was a good kind of tired.
So, my takeaway? The comparisons are there for a reason. Both are incredible athletes with powerful games. But they’re also different players, with their own unique strengths. It’s going to be fun to watch Coco’s career continue to unfold, and see if she really can follow in Serena’s footsteps. I, for one, will be watching (and maybe trying to steal a few more moves for my own game!).
