So, I was digging into this whole thing about how much those football players in the CFL make, you know, the average salary stuff. It’s kinda interesting, honestly.
I started by just, you know, poking around, seeing what the word on the street was. Heard from some folks that the average CFL player pulls in something like $67,238 a year. Not too shabby, right? Especially when you hear the national average is a bit lower, around $65,270. Made me think, these guys are doing alright.
But then, I dug a bit deeper. Found out that the average salary for these players is actually somewhere between $80,000 and $90,000 a year. That’s a decent chunk of change. And when you compare it to other pro leagues, it’s not the top, but it’s definitely something.
This Year’s Numbers
Then I got into the nitty-gritty of it all, the numbers for 2024. From what I gathered, the average salary for a CFL player this year is ranging from about 100,000 to 130,000 Canadian dollars. That’s pretty good. And get this, some of the big names, especially the quarterbacks, they’re pulling in over 400,000 Canadian dollars. On the flip side, the special teams guys are on the lower end of that scale. It’s quite the range.
I also found out who the top dog is this year in terms of salary. It’s Nathan Rourke, a quarterback for the B.C. Lions. The dude’s making $600,000 a year. Talk about a payday! Compared to the league average of around $73,200, that’s huge.
But here’s the kicker. Even though they might not be making as much as some other athletes in different leagues, these CFL players are still earning more than most folks their age. Many of them are in the top 10% of income earners in Canada. And the top earners? They’re in the top 1%.
Looking at the Experience
I also looked into how experienced these players are. Turns out, there are about 93 first-year players, which is around 19% of the total. Last year, that number was 69. On average, a player has about 39 games under their belt, which is roughly three years in the CFL. Veterans, though, they average around 48 games.
The Business Side of Things
And then, I stumbled upon some info about the financial side of a CFL club. One club reported a loss of over a million dollars in the 2023-24 financial year. Their total revenue was $35.6 million, down from $39.7 million the previous year. That’s a bit of a dip, but it gives you a peek into the business side of things.
It’s a whole world of numbers, that’s for sure. From the average Joe on the team to the star quarterback, and from the rookies to the seasoned veterans, the financial landscape of the CFL is pretty diverse. It’s interesting to see how it all stacks up, both within the league and compared to the rest of the country.
Honestly, it’s been a bit of an eye-opener, diving into these numbers. It makes you appreciate the game and the players a bit more, knowing what they’re bringing in and how it compares to the everyday person. Pretty cool stuff, if you ask me.
