Okay, so the other day I was chilling on the couch, and I got this sudden urge to do a crossword puzzle. You know, those word games where you gotta fill in the blanks? Usually, I just grab one from the newspaper, but this time I wanted something a bit more… specific. I’m a huge sports fan, so I thought, “Why not a crossword about championship games?”

I started by Googling around, trying to find a ready-made one. I typed in stuff like “championship game crossword” and “sports final crossword,” but honestly, I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for. Some were too easy, some were too focused on a particular sport, and some were just… boring. So, being the stubborn person I am, I decided to make my own!
My DIY Crossword Adventure
First, I grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil. Yeah, I’m old school like that. I could’ve used some fancy software, but I like the feel of actually drawing things out. I started by sketching a basic grid – you know, the black and white squares. I figured a 15×15 grid would be a good size, not too big, not too small.
Next up, the hard part: coming up with the words! I wanted a mix of sports, so I brainstormed a bunch of championship-related terms. Stuff like:
- SUPERBOWL
- STANLEYCUP
- WORLDCUP
- FINALS
- CHAMPION
- MVP (Most Valuable Player, of course!)
- OVERTIME
I also threw in some names of famous championship venues and maybe a few legendary players, just to spice things up. I played around with the words, trying to fit them together in the grid. It was like a puzzle within a puzzle! It took a lot of erasing and rewriting, moving things around until it all clicked.
Once I had the words in place, I started writing the clues. This was actually pretty fun. I tried to make them a little challenging, but not so hard that you’d need a PhD in sports history to solve them. For example, for “OVERTIME,” I wrote something like, “Extra period in a tied game.” Simple enough, right?

After I finished the clues, I made a clean copy of the whole thing. I even numbered the squares all nicely, just like a real crossword. It took a few hours, but honestly, it was a blast. It felt good to create something from scratch, and it was a fun way to test my own sports knowledge.
I ended up giving the crossword to my brother, who’s also a big sports fan. He loved it! It was a little rough around the edges, but he appreciated the effort. I think making your puzzle gives so much fun.
