Alright, so today I’m gonna share my little experiment with making what I call “falling water ice heart mushroom.” Sounds kinda fancy, right? Well, it’s way simpler than it seems. Let’s dive in.

First things first, I grabbed my supplies. You’ll need some distilled water – important, tap water makes it cloudy – a clean container (I used a glass bowl), some food coloring (gel works best, I had blue), and a freezer, obviously.
Next up, the mixing. Poured the distilled water into the bowl. Now, here’s where the fun begins. I wanted a cool blue, so I added just a tiny dab of blue food coloring. Stirred it gently until it was all mixed in. Not too much, you want it to be a subtle color.
Then, I stuck it in the freezer. Now, this is the tricky part. You don’t want it to freeze solid. I wanted layers, so I checked on it every hour or so. Once a thin layer of ice formed on top, I carefully poked a hole in the center.
Now, comes the “falling water” part. I drained the liquid water out from the hole, leaving behind the icy shell. Be careful, it’s fragile! I flipped it over to get all the water out. This leaves a hollow space inside.
Back in the freezer it goes! I repeated this process like two or three times, freezing a layer, poking a hole, draining the water, until I had a pretty thick ice shell. Kinda looked like a weird, icy bowl at this point.

For the “heart” part, I took some of the leftover colored water and froze it in a small heart-shaped mold I had lying around. Any small mold will do, really. Once frozen, I popped it out.
Finally, the assembly. I carefully placed the frozen heart inside the hollow ice shell. Now, for the “mushroom” look, I took a little bit of the colored water and froze it separately in a small cup. Once frozen, I popped it out and placed it on top of the icy bowl as the “mushroom cap”.
And that’s it! My “falling water ice heart mushroom” was done. It looked really cool with the light shining through the layers of ice and the little blue heart inside. It’s not perfect, and honestly, it melted pretty fast, but it was a fun little experiment.
Lessons learned? Definitely use distilled water, patience is key for layering, and have fun with it! Next time, I might try different colors or even add some edible glitter for extra sparkle. Give it a try yourself and see what you come up with!
