Okay, so I wanted to figure out who the real G.O.A.T of basketball is. Not just by watching games, but by really digging into the numbers. So, I started this whole project.

First, I needed a way to compare players. I found this tool called “Hoopgoat” that lets you make lists of NBA players and teams, both current and all-time. Sounded pretty cool, so I started playing around with it. I made a bunch of lists, trying to rank players based on different things, like overall performance and how they did in specific seasons.
Digging Deeper
But it wasn’t enough to just make lists. I wanted the real stats. I found another site, I think it was called “HoopsHype”, that had this thing called “Global Rating”. Basically, it’s a way to measure how good a player is based on a whole bunch of data. I spent hours looking at these ratings, comparing players from different eras and teams.
- I started with the current season, checking out the top players and seeing how they stacked up against each other.
- Then I went back in time, looking at legends like Jordan, LeBron, and others, trying to see how their Global Ratings compared to today’s stars.
- It was tough, because the game has changed so much over the years. But the numbers don’t lie, right?
The Result
After all that digging, I finally had my list. It wasn’t easy, and I’m sure some people will disagree, but based on the numbers, I think I figured out who the real basketball G.O.A.T is. It’s not about who you like the most, but about who really performed the best, according to the data. And let me tell you, the results were pretty surprising!
This whole thing took me way longer than I expected. I was up late, staring at spreadsheets, and driving my friends crazy with basketball stats. It felt like an endless task. But in the end, I think it was worth it. I learned a ton about basketball, and I finally have an answer to that age-old question: who is the greatest of all time? Now, it’s not necessarily who I thought it would be, and that’s what made this whole journey so interesting. It’s funny how you start with an idea, and the data just takes you somewhere completely unexpected.
I started this project just wanting to know who was the best and ended up going down this huge rabbit hole of stats and history.
This whole experience reminds me of this other time, a few years back, when I was trying to learn a new programming language for a project. I spent weeks just reading tutorials and watching videos, but it wasn’t until I actually started building something that it all clicked. Same with this basketball deep dive.
