Okay, so I’ve been watching a bit of ball lately, mostly college stuff when I got the time. And yeah, I kept seeing this Purdue team and obviously, Zach Edey. Big dude, impossible to miss.

Honestly, I started watching Purdue just ’cause they were always on and ranked high. First few times, you just see the height. It’s impressive, gotta admit. Seven-foot-four, that’s just wild. He gets the ball down low, turns around, drops it in. Simple stuff, seemed effective.
My Watching Process
But then I started watching more, you know? Not just highlights, but whole games, especially during the tournament run. I wasn’t trying to scout him or anything, just watching as a fan. And the more I watched, the more I just found myself getting… well, kinda bored? Frustrated even.
Here’s what I started noticing, just my own observations from the couch:
- The Pace: Everything just seemed to slow way down when the offense ran through him. Get ball to Edey, wait, hope for foul or basket. It felt clunky sometimes.
- Mobility… or Lack Of: Yeah, he’s huge, but watching him try to guard pick-and-rolls or players out on the perimeter, it just looked tough. Like watching a building try to shuffle its feet. Seemed like teams could exploit that if they were quick.
- Reliance on Size: It felt like 90% of his game was just being bigger than everyone. Which, okay, use your strengths. But I like seeing more skill, more finesse, maybe? Seemed like if a team had someone even close to his size or just really physical, his effectiveness dropped noticeably.
I remember this one game, I think it was UConn, maybe? Anyway, I was multitasking, trying to fix this leaky faucet in the kitchen – total pain, by the way, the gasket was completely shredded. Had water spraying for a bit. So I’m half under the sink, half glancing at the TV.
Every time I looked up, it felt like the same thing: Edey posting up, getting fouled, or making a little hook shot. Meanwhile, the other team is running, cutting, hitting threes. It just felt like different eras of basketball colliding.

Look, I get it. He put up massive numbers. Player of the Year, all that. Can’t argue with the stats he accumulated. He definitely impacted the game. But was it fun to watch? For me, not really. It felt kinda one-dimensional. Like, okay, he’s tall. What else?
So yeah, that’s kinda how I landed there. It wasn’t like one specific moment, just watching game after game, seeing the same patterns. Maybe “sucks” is too harsh, I dunno. But man, watching Purdue games often felt like a chore because of that style. Just my two cents from my own viewing experience, messing with plumbing and catching games when I could.
