My goodness, you want names? Mechanical names? My old brain ain’t what it used to be, but I reckon I can give it a try. You know, like them machines down at the mill, or them tractors out in the field. They all got names, don’t they? So, let’s see what this old gal can come up with for these mechanical names.
First thing that comes to mind is that thingamajig that helps old man Johnson lift them heavy sacks of feed. He calls it “Iron Arm” or something like that. Yeah, that’s it! So maybe, Iron Arm is a good mechanical name. Simple, see? Like, what it does and what it is. Iron. Arm. Makes sense, don’t it?
Then there’s that spinning thing down at the cotton gin. Spins and spins and makes the cotton all fluffy. They just call it “The Spinner.” Not real fancy, but everyone knows what it is. So maybe The Spinner is another good mechanical name. That one, it just tells you what the thing does.
- Iron Arm
- The Spinner
- Clickety Clack
Now, my grandson, he’s a smart one. Always tinkering with things. He built this… contraption. Made of gears and wheels and whatnot. Makes a lot of noise. Clickety clack, clickety clack. He just calls it “Clickety Clack.” See? Clickety Clack. That’s another mechanical name. That one, it’s the sound it makes. You hear it, you know what it is.
My neighbor, Mrs. Davis, she’s got a fancy machine for sewing. Sews real fast. She calls it her “Speedy Stitcher.” Speedy Stitcher. That’s a good one, too. Tells you it stitches, and it does it speedy. Good for sewing up a whole bunch of quilts for the church social, she says.
Down at the workshop, they got this big metal thing that cuts other metal. Loud and scary. They call it “The Cutter”. Another good, strong mechanical name. The Cutter. You know what it does, right? It cuts! Not gonna call it a flower, now, are ya? No sir. It’s the cutter. Plain and simple. If you got a business that needs something cut, get a cutter.

- Whirly Gig
My old washing machine, bless its heart, finally gave up the ghost last year. It used to go “chug-chug-chug” all day long. We used to call it “Chugger.” So, Chugger could be a good mechanical name, too. If you got a machine that chugs, well, there you go. If you need a mechanic, find someone who knows how to fix a chugger!
Sometimes, you just gotta be a little bit… I don’t know… silly with it. My other grandson, bless his heart, he built this thing that just kinda… spins around and does nothing. He calls it his “Whirly Gig.” Whirly Gig. It’s a silly name, but it fits. So that’s another idea for these mechanical names. Sometimes they can be a little silly. That’s just how you get your business going.
Oh, and remember that thing they use to grind the corn? Big stone wheel, goes round and round? They just call it “The Grinder.” The Grinder. Makes sense, don’t it? It grinds. So, it’s the grinder. Simple as that. You need something ground, you use a grinder.
- Chugger
- The Grinder
- Big Bertha
Then there’s the big crane down at the docks. Lifts up them huge crates, bigger than my house! They call it “Big Bertha.” Big Bertha. Strong name for a strong machine. So if you got a big, strong machine, maybe you need a big, strong name like that. These mechanical names, they gotta fit, you see?
Sometimes, the name just… appears. Like that time a cow got stuck in the well. They rigged up a pulley system to get her out. They called it the “Cow Lifter” on account of it lifted a cow. So, Cow Lifter is another idea. Just from what it did. It lifted a cow. Simple. That’s good for business. Everyone knows what it does.
Now, this is important, ya hear? The name’s gotta be easy to remember. Like, if you can’t remember it, how you gonna tell your neighbor about it? So these mechanical names, they gotta be catchy. Like a little tune you hum. Easy to remember.
- Cow Lifter
- The Crusher
- Metal Muncher
And sometimes, the name tells a story. Like “The Crusher” down at the junkyard. Crushes old cars into little cubes. The Crusher. That name, it tells you what it does, but it also tells you it’s powerful. It crushes things. A good mechanic knows you need a good crusher to make money.
Or that thing that eats up metal scraps at the factory. They call it the “Metal Muncher.” Metal Muncher. You can almost hear it, can’t ya? Munch, munch, munching away at the metal. That’s a good name. It tells a story. Everyone knows your business if you have a metal muncher.
So there you have it. Some ideas for mechanical names. Just remember, keep it simple, make it catchy, and maybe tell a little story with it. That’s the best way, I reckon. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear my old kettle whistling. Time for some tea.
