Well, let me tell ya, this here Santa Clara prediction thing, it’s a bit like guessin’ how many eggs my old hen Bessie’s gonna lay next week. You just don’t rightly know for sure, but you can look at a few things and make a guess, you know?
I heard tell that Santa Clara’s gonna be playin’ some basketball games. Seems like they’re jumpin’ around like fleas on a dog, playin’ this team and then that team. One time they’re playin’ against Saint Louis, then it’s Stanford, then Cal, then BYU, then New Mexico… Lordy, makes my head spin just thinkin’ about it!
Now, some folks, they like to put money on these games. They call it “betting” or some such fancy word. They look at the “odds” and the “lines” and all that jibber-jabber. I don’t rightly understand it all, but it sounds like they’re tryin’ to figure out who’s gonna win and by how much.
I seen somethin’ about Santa Clara bein’ “favored” by a couple points against Cal. That just means the smart fellas think Santa Clara’s gonna win, but not by a whole heap. Like if you’re sellin’ eggs and you say you got “about a dozen,” well, you might have 11, you might have 13, but it’s gonna be close to 12, you see?
- They say Santa Clara is playing Saint Louis at Sanford Pentagon.
- Then they got a game against Stanford at Leavey Center. Sounds fancy, huh?
- And don’t forget about them playin’ Cal. Folks seem to think that’ll be a close one.
- There’s also talk about games against BYU and New Mexico. Busy little bees, ain’t they?
Someone was yappin’ about Gonzaga winnin’ a game after losin’ at home. Said it was the first time in a long time they lost at home. Seventy-five games they won in a row, can you believe that? That’s like sayin’ Bessie laid an egg every day for two and a half months! That’s a lotta eggs!
Anyways, back to this Santa Clara predictin’. Some folks, they think they can tell you how many points are gonna be scored in a game. They look at how many points Santa Clara usually scores, and how many points the other team lets folks score, and they mash it all together like makin’ sausage. Then they come up with a number.
For example, if they think Santa Clara and New Mexico are gonna score a lot of points, they might say somethin’ like, “bet on the over.” That means they think the total score will be more than some number they set. If they think it’ll be a low-scoring game, they might say, “bet on the under.” It’s all a gamble if you ask me, like tryin’ to predict the weather.
I even heard some folks talkin’ about DraftKings. Sounds like another one of them places where you can put your money down on these games. I ain’t got no money to be throwin’ around like that, but some folks, they like the thrill of it, I guess.
So, what’s my Santa Clara prediction? Well, it’s hard to say for sure. They seem like a pretty good team, winnin’ some games and losin’ some others. It depends on who they are playin’ and if them fellas got their heads in the game that day. If they play like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off, they gonna lose. But if they work together like a team of good ol’ farm horses, well, then they got a good chance of winnin’.
But if you pushed me, I’d say they’ll probably win some more games and lose some more games. Just like the rest of us, they have good days and bad days. That’s just life, ain’t it? Sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down, sometimes you’re just scratchin’ around tryin’ to make a livin’. And sometimes you’re just trying to guess how many points a bunch of young fellas gonna score in a basketball game.
One thing I can predict for sure, though, is that there will be a lot more basketball games to come. And folks will keep on bettin’ and predictin’ and arguin’ about who’s gonna win. And that’s just the way it is.
