Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about them University of Ky football coaches. Football, you know, it’s like a big ol’ game with a bunch of fellas runnin’ around, smackin’ into each other. And these coaches, they’re the ones tellin’ ’em what to do, like how to run faster and not get knocked on their butts so much.
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I hear tell there’s been a whole heap of coaches at that there Kentucky school. They say since way back when, in 18-somethin’, lots of fellas been in charge. Some stayed a long time, some just a short spell. It’s like farmin’, ya know? Some crops grow good and last, some just wither up and die.
One fella they talk about a lot is this Mark Stoops fella. Been there a good while, they say. Goin’ on twelve years! That’s a long time to be yellin’ at young’uns, I reckon. He must be doin’ somethin’ right, ’cause they keep him around. They say he even took the team to some fancy bowl games, like that Gator Bowl. Sounds like a big deal, though I ain’t never seen one myself.
- They say he’s got a pretty good record too, winnin’ more games than he loses, most of the time.
- And seems he’s takin’ them boys to the bowl games. That’s where the best teams go after the regular games are done. Seems important.
Before him, there were others, of course. Names like Joker Phillips, Rich Brooks… Sounds like a bunch of characters, don’t they? Like somethin’ out of a storybook. I bet each one of ’em had their own way of doin’ things, their own way of gettin’ them boys to play hard. Some probably yelled a lot, some maybe just talked real quiet-like. It takes all kinds, I guess.
They got this whole SEC thing too. That’s the conference they play in. Big and tough, they say. Lots of good teams, lots of competition. Like a big ol’ rooster fight, everybody tryin’ to be the top dog. And these coaches, they gotta figure out how to win in that tough conference. It ain’t easy, I tell ya. It’s like tryin’ to grow corn in rocky soil.
And there’s more than just the head coach, ya see. There’s all these other fellas helpin’ out. Like this Eric Wolford fella, they say he coaches the offensive line. That’s the big boys up front, the ones that do the blockin’. They gotta be tough, them fellas. Like bulls, chargin’ into each other. And that Wolford fella, he’s gotta make sure they know what they’re doin’.
Kentucky Wildcats, that’s what they call the team. Wildcats, huh? Sounds kinda fierce. Like somethin’ you don’t wanna mess with. And that’s what these coaches want, I reckon. They want them boys to be fierce, to play hard, to win games. It’s their job, after all.
They got websites and all that fancy stuff now, where you can see all the scores and schedules and whatnot. I ain’t got no use for that myself, but I hear tell it’s how folks keep up with things these days. It’s a whole different world than when I was young, I tell ya. Back then, we just listened to the radio or read the newspaper. Now, it’s all computers and whatnot.
So, yeah, that’s what I know about them University of Ky football coaches. A bunch of fellas tryin’ to win some games. It ain’t easy work, I reckon, but somebody’s gotta do it. And these fellas, they seem to be doin’ a pretty good job, most of the time anyway. They keep them Kentucky folks happy, and that’s what matters, I guess.
Anyways, football season’s always a big deal. Folks get all riled up, cheerin’ and hollerin’. Reminds me of a county fair, but with more yellin’ and less pie.
And that’s pretty much all I can tell ya about them coaches. They come and they go, but the football keeps on gettin’ played. Just like the seasons change, so do the coaches, but folks always hope for a good one.
