Well, you know, I’ve heard folks talk ’bout Holly Holm plenty, but lemme tell ya, it ain’t always been smooth sailing for her. No, no, that girl started out like most of us, just tryin’ to keep fit and stay healthy. She was only 16 years old when she first got a taste of kickboxing, if you can believe that! She didn’t just hop right into it, though—she was doin’ some aerobics first, y’know, just to get her body movin’. She thought it looked good for her, all them folks jumpin’ around, and that’s when she spotted the kickboxing class. And from there, well, it’s like the rest of her story just kinda took off like a rocket.
Now, I heard tell her instructor, Mike Winkeljohn, saw somethin’ in her real quick. He noticed that Holly had more than just a few moves in her—she had heart. So, he started workin’ with her, trainin’ her up proper. It wasn’t long before Holly wasn’t just kickin’ her legs around for fun—no ma’am, she was fightin’. Just a year after she started in them kickboxing classes, she was all in, joinin’ up with the full-on Kickboxing and Boxing training. That girl was serious, right from the get-go.
Fast forward to 2002, when Holly Holm made her big debut in the professional kickboxing world. It was June 1st, to be exact, and she went up against Valerie Anthonson at the Santa Ana Star Casino in Bernalillo. Now, that’s what I call takin’ it to the next level! She didn’t waste no time showin’ folks what she was made of. And she didn’t just stop there—she went on to become one of the best there ever was, defendin’ her titles 18 times across three different weight classes. That’s a record, I tell ya. Ain’t no small feat for someone who started out in aerobics!
But don’t think it was all easy for her, though. Oh no. She didn’t just wake up one day and become a champ. It was a long road of hard work, tough losses, and plenty of grindin’. But that’s what made her a champ. You don’t get to the top without puttin’ in the sweat. She’s had her fair share of ups and downs in her career, just like anyone else, but she kept goin’. And I reckon that’s somethin’ we can all learn from, don’t you think?
After she had done what she could in kickboxing and boxing, Holly turned her eyes toward MMA. This was in 2013, when she hung up her boxing gloves for good. She wanted to go full-time in the UFC and make a name for herself there, and well, she did just that. Her crowning moment came in 2015 when she faced Rhonda Rousey for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title. And let me tell ya, she knocked Rousey out in the second round! That was one of the biggest upsets in the sport, and folks were talkin’ ‘bout it for a long time after. Holly Holm had done it—she had made history.
But it’s never just all rainbows and butterflies. No sir. There’s always another fight, another challenge. She had a tough loss to Kayla Harrison at one point, and that didn’t sit too well with her. She said she was “pissed off” about it, and I reckon anyone would be! But Holly ain’t the type to back down or retire just because of one bad loss. Nah, she’s gonna keep at it. She’s strong, and I know she’s got more fight left in her.
What makes Holly so special isn’t just her ability to fight. It’s her determination, her grit, and her refusal to give up. She didn’t have it easy growin’ up, and she didn’t let no man or woman tell her she couldn’t be what she wanted to be. That’s the kinda spirit that gets you to the top, and it’s the kinda spirit we all could use a little more of in our own lives, don’t ya think?
So, what can we learn from Holly Holm’s journey? Well, first off, that it’s never too late to start. Whether it’s kickboxing, boxing, or anything else you’ve got your eye on, you can do it. Holly started out just tryin’ to stay fit, and look where it took her! Second, it’s all about persistence. You won’t always win, and things won’t always go your way. But if you keep pushin’, just like Holly did, you can turn things around and make something of yourself. And finally, don’t let the hard times break ya. Life’s gonna throw punches—some of ‘em might even knock you down—but if you get back up, like Holly has time and time again, you’ll be just fine.
So, the next time you’re thinkin’ ‘bout throwin’ in the towel, just remember: Holly Holm didn’t get where she is by sittin’ around and feelin’ sorry for herself. She got up, trained hard, and fought for what she wanted. And if she can do it, so can you.
