Well now, y’all probably wanna know how that big ol’ fella, Babe Ruth, went on to meet his maker. You see, it wasn’t a sudden thing. He didn’t just up and fall down one day while swingin’ his bat or somethin’ like that. Nah, it was a slow thing, and it happened after he had been fightin’ with his health for quite some time.
Babe Ruth, you know, that big ol’ man who hit them home runs like nobody else could, had a rough go toward the end. It all started back in 1946, when he started feelin’ pain in his left side, ‘round his eye. He had trouble swallowin’ too, and that’s when he went to see the doctors. They did all kinds of tests, and they found a tumor sittin’ at the base of his skull. Now, this weren’t just any little tumor – it was a bad one, a malignant one. And it was inoperable, meaning they couldn’t do nothin’ about it. This was some serious business.
Even though the doctors tried their best, they just couldn’t stop it. They gave him all kinds of treatments, even used radiation and chemotherapy, but it didn’t help. In fact, the poor man just kept gettin’ weaker and weaker as the cancer spread. They even gave him hormone therapy and did surgery, but it was all for nothin’. The cancer, it was too far gone.
By the time 1948 rolled around, Babe Ruth wasn’t the same man he used to be. The man who used to hit home runs like it was nothin’ was now bedridden, fightin’ for his life. His condition got worse, and eventually, on August 16th, 1948, Babe Ruth passed away. He was only 53 years old. You know, I reckon a lot of folks thought he’d live a long time, given how tough he seemed. But cancer, well, it don’t care who you are or how strong you seem.
His funeral, now that was somethin’. Thousands of folks showed up to pay their respects. They had his body layin’ in state at Yankee Stadium, and people came from all over just to see him one last time. You could feel the sorrow in the air. It wasn’t just the fans from New York, but baseball fans from all around. Ruth had been such a big part of their lives, and they wanted to honor him. His funeral went on for three days, and it ended at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where even more people came to say their goodbyes.
But y’know, even though Babe Ruth’s gone, folks still talk about him like he’s one of the greatest. His name is still big in baseball, and it don’t seem like it’ll fade anytime soon. He may have left us early, but he sure made an impact. The world of baseball won’t ever forget him. That’s for sure.
So, that’s how Babe Ruth passed on. It wasn’t quick, and it sure wasn’t easy. But he fought till the end, just like the champ he was. Rest in peace, Babe Ruth. You’ll always be remembered, that’s for sure.
