Alright, decided to get some practice in today. The weather was decent enough, not too windy, which is always a plus. Headed over to the usual spot, the driving range mats were calling my name.

First things first, getting the old back stretched out. Being a taller guy, maybe 6’4″ on a good day, if I don’t warm up properly, things can get tight real quick. Spent a good ten minutes just loosening up the shoulders, hips, and especially the lower back. Did some slow, easy swings without a ball, just trying to feel some rhythm before actually hitting anything.
Getting into the Swing
Started off with the wedges, as usual. Grabbed the trusty pitching wedge. The main thing I was trying to feel today was staying centered. It’s easy for me, with the long levers and all, to kind of sway off the ball. So, I focused on keeping my weight more stable. Hit maybe 20-30 balls, just focusing on that feeling. Some were good, crisp contact. Others… well, let’s just say the ground felt them more than the ball did. Typical.
Then moved onto the mid-irons. Pulled out the 7-iron. This is where posture becomes a bigger deal for me. Gotta really make sure I’m not too hunched over, but also not standing bolt upright. It’s a constant battle, you know? Tried to keep that same feeling of staying centered. Worked on tempo mostly.
- Tried not to rush the backswing.
- Focused on a smooth transition.
- Tried to finish balanced.
Hit a fair few decent ones. When you catch it right, even off a mat, it feels good. Had a few thin ones, a few fat ones – the usual suspects when I get lazy with my posture or try to kill it.
The Big Sticks and Final Thoughts
After the irons felt okay-ish, I grabbed the 3-wood and then the driver. Always a bit of an adventure. Being tall means a wider arc, and sometimes it feels like there’s just more time for things to go wrong! Again, the focus was tempo and balance. Tried to swing easy, maybe 80%, instead of going full tilt. It’s hard to resist, especially when you see other folks bombing it, but disciplined swinging usually works out better for me.

The driver was… okay. Hit a few that felt really solid, nice high draw. Also hit a few spectacular slices that probably endangered the cars in the parking lot. It’s a work in progress, always is. You fix one thing, another pops up.
Finished off with about 15 minutes of putting practice on the little green they have. Just some lag putts and short ones. Again, posture check – making sure I’m comfortable over the ball without feeling like I’m folded in half.
Packed up the bag. Overall, not a bad session. Didn’t discover any magic secrets, just put in some reps. Felt like I made a tiny bit of progress on staying centered, especially with the irons. The driver still needs plenty of attention. But hey, that’s golf, right? Especially when you’re trying to coordinate a longer frame. Back at it again soon.
