Alright, so I wanted to share something I fiddled with recently. Heard this phrase somewhere, “sam burns succubus and the city”, and it just kinda lodged itself in my brain. Dunno why, maybe it sounded like some gritty comic book or an indie game I missed.

Anyway, it got me thinking. What’s the story there? My first thoughts went straight to the obvious: guy named Sam, maybe some kind of supernatural hunter, taking down a succubus in a big city setting. Classic urban fantasy stuff, right? So, I figured, why not try sketching out some ideas? Just for kicks.
Getting Started – The Messy Part
I grabbed a notebook – yeah, I still use pen and paper sometimes, helps me think. Started jotting down stuff about Sam.
- Who is he?
- Why’s he burning a succubus? Is it literal fire, or something else?
- What kind of city are we talking? Shiny and new, or old and grimy?
Tried picturing this Sam character. Maybe he’s tired, seen too much weird stuff. Or maybe he’s young and angry. And the succubus… is she just pure evil? Or is it more complicated? That felt more interesting. Maybe she wasn’t a villain in the traditional sense.
Then I actually tried writing a scene. Just a short bit, Sam tracking the succubus through rainy streets, neon lights reflecting everywhere. Sounds cool, right? Well, it felt kinda flat. The words just weren’t coming together the way I saw it in my head. It felt forced, like I was just hitting the usual story beats.
Shifting Gears
Got a bit stuck, honestly. Put it down for a day or two. When I came back to it, I thought, maybe I’m taking the “burns” part too literally. What if Sam isn’t attacking her? What if “burns” means something else entirely?

Maybe Sam’s the one getting burned, like falling for her or getting tangled in her world? Or maybe Sam is the succubus, dealing with their own destructive nature within the city? That felt a bit more… different. Less straightforward.
So I played around with that idea instead. Didn’t write a full story or anything close. It was more like scribbling character notes, bits of dialogue, exploring the feeling of it rather than a solid plot. Thinking about how a succubus might actually navigate modern city life, the loneliness, the temptations (hers and others’). Less about fighting, more about surviving, maybe even connecting.
Where It Ended Up (For Now)
So, yeah. No finished product. Just a bunch of notes and a slightly different take on that initial phrase. It was an interesting exercise, though. Made me think about how we jump to conclusions based on a few words. “Burns” and “succubus” immediately made me think of conflict, but maybe the real story is quieter, stranger.
It’s funny how ideas work. You start in one place, push things around, get stuck, and sometimes end up somewhere unexpected. Didn’t really ‘achieve’ anything concrete, but the process of just messing with the concept was the main thing. Maybe I’ll pick it up again later, maybe not. But that was my little adventure with “sam burns succubus and the city”. Just thought I’d share the process.
