Okay, so I got curious about this whole “Wonderlic” thing after hearing some football talk. I’d heard of Joe Montana, obviously, legendary quarterback and all that. Then this Wonderlic score thing came up, and I was like, “What’s that all about?” So, I decided to do some digging.
First, I fired up my trusty web browser. I just did a simple search for “joe montana wonderlic score.” Man, did I get a lot of hits! Lots of sports forums, articles, and blog posts. It was a bit of a mess, to be honest.
Digging Through the Info
I started clicking through some of the results. Most places just threw out a number, but they didn’t really explain what it meant. Some sites seemed to contradict each other, which was frustrating. I felt like I was going in circles.

- It’s used by the NFL (and other places) to kind of get a quick read on a player’s cognitive abilities.
- I found out it’s got 50 questions and you only get 12 minutes to do it. Yikes! Talk about pressure.
I kept sifting through the information. Finally, I landed on a few reputable sources. It seems like the general consensus is that Montana’s Wonderlic score was reported to be around the low 30s by different source. Some sources even saying 32 or even 33. Not bad.
I also discovered that a high Wonderlic score doesn’t guarantee success, and a lower score doesn’t mean failure. Look at Montana, he’s a Hall of Famer! There was a whole bunch of back and forth on this score thing.
So, after all that searching, I figured out Montana’s supposed Wonderlic score. More importantly, I realized the score is just one tiny piece of the puzzle. There are so many other things that make a great football player – like leadership, determination, and the ability to read the field. I think this whole deep dive has shown that to me.
