Okay, so I was messing around in CS2 the other day, and I got really curious about how this whole “2OT” thing works. I mean, I’ve seen it pop up in matches, but I never really got it, you know?

Figuring Out 2OT in CS2
First things first, I jumped into a regular competitive match. I needed to see this thing in action, not just read about it. I figured experiencing it firsthand was the best way to learn. We played a few rounds, and of course, eventually, we ended up in a tie game. Then, boom, overtime started.
Initially, it was the usual overtime format, the one I was used to – MR3, I think it’s called, with $10,000 starting money. We played those rounds, won some, lost some, and, what do you know, we ended up tied again!
That’s when the magic happened. The game didn’t end. It went into a second overtime. This time, the starting money jumped up to $16,000. Suddenly it’s more tactical I’ve get more options to work with.
So, here’s the breakdown of how I think 2OT works, based on my little experiment:
- Regular Match Ends in a Tie: This is your standard 15-15 tie.
- First Overtime (MR3, $10,000): You play a shorter set of rounds, best of three, with $10,000 to start.
- Still Tied? Second Overtime! (MR3, $16,000): If you’re still tied after the first overtime, you go into another overtime, still best of three, but with a bigger bankroll – $16,000.
It is important to note that the game is only MR3 and I made this mistake.

Basically, 2OT just means you get another shot at breaking the tie, and with more money to play with. It makes things way more intense, because every round really, really counts. You’ve got more cash for better weapons and utility, so the strategies get deeper. No more eco rounds in 2OT!
