Alright, so I decided to tackle the LA Times crossword for today, May 22nd, 2024. I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty hit-or-miss with these things. Some days I feel like a genius, other days I’m staring at a blank grid for an hour.
First thing I did was print it out. Yeah, I’m old school like that. I like to have it in front of me, you know? I can scribble, make notes, and it just feels more…real.
I grabbed a pen – gotta be a pen, not a pencil. Pencils are for quitters! Just kidding (mostly). But seriously, pen forces you to commit, and sometimes that’s what you need.
Then I did a quick scan of the clues. Just looking for anything that jumped out at me – super easy ones, fill-in-the-blanks, that kind of stuff. Gotta build up some momentum, right?
Starting to Fill In
- I found a couple of gimmes right away. Short words, obvious answers. Boom, got those in.
- Then I started working the intersections. You know, where you get one letter from a word you already filled in, and it helps you figure out another word. It’s like a little puzzle within the puzzle.
I got stuck a few times, of course. There were some clues that were just…ugh. Like, who knows that stuff? But I didn’t give up. I took a break, walked around, got some coffee, and came back to it with fresh eyes.

Sometimes, that’s all it takes. A little distance. You come back, and suddenly a clue that was totally baffling before makes perfect sense.
The Final Stretch
I kept chipping away at it. Some clues I had to guess, using the letters I already had to kind of narrow it down. Sometimes I got lucky, sometimes I didn’t. It’s all part of the game.
Finally, after what felt like forever (but was probably only, like, 45 minutes), I filled in the last square. Woohoo! Success!
It wasn’t perfect. I’m pretty sure I guessed wrong on at least one or two. But hey, I finished it. And that’s a win in my book.
So yeah, that was my experience with today’s LA Times crossword. Not always pretty, but definitely satisfying. Now, on to tomorrow’s puzzle…
