Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with figuring out how likely some folks thought Gane was gonna win against Spivak in that UFC Paris fight. I saw some numbers floating around and wanted to see if I could make sense of them.
First thing I did was grab the odds I saw online. They had Gane as a -178 favorite. Now, I’m not a huge gambler, so I had to think about what that even meant. Basically, it means you gotta bet 178 bucks on Gane to win 100 bucks if he pulls it off.
On the other side, Spivak was the underdog at +150. That’s a little easier to understand. Bet 100 on him, and if he wins, you get 150 bucks, not to mention, your origin bet, total is 250.
So, I wanted to figure out what percentage chance these numbers gave Gane to win. I did it.
- I took that -178 for Gane, I put 178 under a fraction line, then I put another 178 up to the line and add 100, the 178+100=278 is the number on the fraction line.
- Then I used 278 divided by 178.
- I get a number: 1.56. Then use 100 divided by 1.56.
- Finally, I got 64% !
I did all that stuff, and I was able to make it, so I decided to share with you guys, I did it!
